Fascinating article about animal behavioural origins of morality,

One way a theist can guarantee to have me grinding my teeth is by telling me that atheists, by definition, can have no 'moral compass'. This statement, apart from being mind-numbingly offensive, it just so obviously wrong I don't know where to start. This article looks at how (especially social) animals enforce a series of rules during play, to avoid injury while practicing necessary life-skills, and then how breaking those rules leads to social consequences. Although it concentrates on canids…See More

A Question of Arrogance

I keep seeing that word, "arrogant", being thrown around by the religious. Scientists are arrogant. Atheists are arrogant. And those invitations to debate - "talk with me, but don't be arrogant!" What they mean is, don't show me up, don't make me look like a fool, don't push my out of my comfort zone. Don't be confident, don't be informed, don't behave like you know what you are talking about. Don't be "arrogant". It's wielded like a weapon, like a threat - and there is no self-reflection about…See More

"Now, charismatic religion can seem more like a dance party to me and maybe even somewhat orgasmic.  As to the more established religions, I think people just plain out don't think and are even afraid to think.  Afraid that they have…"

"Marjoe" - how can people still believe?

I watched the 1972 documentary "Marjoe" tonight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068924/) and I confess to being some what bemused. I don't know what I find harder to swallow - that people can con and shuckster people the way these preachers do with such bald-faced fakery, or that the people in the congregation seem to be unable to see it. I don't understand it: how can people not see that these exhortations for money are pure greed and shystery?…See More

Anwyn Davies replied to Jerry Wesner's discussion Does Any Rand represent your atheist philosophy?

The body language of "charismatic" preaching

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:27am 2 Comments

I went to a wedding not long ago, held in a church that I think is Pentecostal, certainly is happy-clappy "charismatic" evangelical in it's style. The preacher took the opportunity to "reach out" to the wedding guests who weren't members of his congregation, and went all-out to convince us of the love of God that was sweeping through the room, and that those who failed to heed this were damned. I didn't feel anything other than cold and uncomfortable; not only did I feel the fire and…

Welcome, Anwyn.  You are very fortunate to be a third generation nontheist.  I know your study of the history of religion has confirmed your nontheism.  (I Like your name very much.)

Welcome, Anwyn! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Atheist Writers and Philosophy (we have lots of philosophy groups). Since Australia is already experiencing the negative consequences of Climate Change, you might want to participate in the discussion at Eco-Logical too.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.
