About Me
I've essentially just finished a PhD in marine biology, though I don't actually have the qualification, yet......... it's been a long road. I specialise in artificial reef ecology, and using stable isotope ratios to explore food webs. I also have interests in predator-prey interactions, and pretty much anything to do with marine ecology.

Now I have to figure out what the hell I'm going to do with the rest of my life.

I can certainly never remember being religious, but have only thought it important to identify myself as an atheist for a few years now. I am an active member of a local atheist group at my university.

I never know what to put in these things to make myself sound like the kind of funky person you'd want to talk to, but if you want to find out more, just ask me!

Bus Wars

[Full versions of all my posts, including images and links, can be found on my blog, Artificial Habitat]

No doubt many of you will be familiar with the atheist bus ads around Britain and the fuss kicked up by a few whining Christians.

Let's not forget that they were a response to religious bus ads giving links to sites which bang on about eternal torment for non-believers.

Well, now they've started responding with ad

Welcome to the first Weekly Science Roundup. These regular posts will consist of quick summaries of interesting papers, articles, and blog posts which I encounter during the preceding week (sometimes they may have been published earlier). The number of items that I mention will vary, and there will be an obvious bias towards biol

Yeah, I finally gave in and did it. But if you want to read it, this time you're going to have to go to my personal blog. I normally cross-post, but I don't have time right now!

8 Lessons and Carols For Godless People

[Cross-posted on Artificial Habitat, including links (which I haven't embedded here) and a selection of photographs from the Natural History Museum]

Yesterday (Thursday 18th) was my birthday. What better way to celebrate than attending a godless Christmas show in London (along with a visit to the Natural History Museum and over 4 hours of walking around London)!

Comedian Robin Ince was inspired by an encounter with the delightful Stephen Gre… Continue

Catholics don't have freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, say leading Catholics

[Cross-posted on Artificial Habitat]

The Vatican owes me another irony meter.

Here are a couple of occurances that will be familiar to those who have encountered Catholics in online discussions:

1) They often (always?) claim that any criticism of their superstitious crap by 'intolerant secular bigots' represents a concerted attempt to deny Catholics their freedom of religion.

2) Any comments to the effect that doctors, nurses, MPs, regist… Continue

A man with big lungs, eh? If that isn't sexy, I don't know what is ;)

My holidays were just about the same as every other day of the year. The only difference is that everyone was home and no one had any personal space. I mostly enjoyed the marathons of awful television programming they use to take up time during the season, ate loads of chocolate, and avoided being consumed by guilt for being non-xian not caring about the season (the way my parents seem to always feel). It worked out really well :)

I am still jobless as well. Applying for more jobs this week though (I took a break while all the offices were empty). It never seems to end. To make matters worse, my poor little dog has come down with a serious infection that requires day-surgery, which is a ridiculous expense. Nothing like spending all the money you don't have on a dog. What can you do. Glad to hear you are doing well. I'm sure you'll find something soon :)

Hey! Sounds like a pretty stellar birthday - especially the chest x-ray! Those are my favourite. I hope they gave you a sucker once you were done (assuming you behaved).

I haven't been around here too much either, myself. Chat seems to have completely died off, as many people have left the site for various personal reasons. For the last few weeks its been like a ghost town.

I'm doing well. Same old really. Still job hunting, but this absurd xian holiday is really ruining my search. Seems that no one wants to do any hiring during the holidays. Apart from that I'm just relaxing, reading, spending time with family, etc. Nothing terribly exciting. What about you? Any news on the job front?

Yes, i like percussion - i play the glockenspiel a little ha ha, or i try at least! I think that the drums would be a great instrument to play once you know how, it just looks like so much fun to me ha ha. I'm also currently learning piano, which i'm loving. I really want to learn the flute or piccolo too. So many instruments i'd love to play really - shame about lack of time to master them! hee hee!!

I sing quite a few different genres generally - pop, classical, soul, folk, country and musical theatre. I dislike jazz as i do not feel that it suits me and i don't really feel connected to the music like other music. I do like to listen to a good jazz singer though - one of the women in my singing school is a great jazz singer and i like to listen to her. Last night though, i did three songs - one classical/folk song by Hayley Westenra called 'prayer' and the other two were 'the first time ever i saw your face' originally done by Roberta Flack (well, not originally, it was actually originally done by ewan mcall but roberta flack is more known) but i was singing the celine dion version as that is my favourite. I also did 'think twice' - another Celine Dion song hee hee.

Do you play any instruments?

I'll be doing my post grad studies too - in psychology. I really like Glasgow, it's a nice city - has a bit of a bad rep but it is completely undeserved. I like that it is much closer to London than here - so great for the theatre and museums and also, it is only 4 hours from where i live in Scotland so it is nice and central. Last night i had a singing gig - i was so nervous as it is the first i have done in years and my voice was shaking uncontrollably - how annoying. I'll have to do them more often so that i can gain enough confidence to lose the shake. Grr!!

Oh right - that's a pity, i won't be able to attend this year. I wish they would do something around April or something. That would be convenient for me ha ha!! I'm still back in Scotland - might be moving to Glasgow in September, or maybe even London again but it's looking more like Glasgow, much more convenient for me there anyway.

ha ha ha, i must say i agree with you on Anne Widdecombe....i hate that woman!! ha ha!

Oh yes, it was between Hume and Smith for me - had to go with Smith since i feel he has had a larger impact on the world. I was annoyed that the Geologists, James Hutton and Charles Lyell were not on that list though! There was a people's choice vote and i voted for Lyell but he was still not nominated!! grr! Never mind!

Oh, i was going to say - have you heard of the greatest scot thing being done by STV? You should vote! There is a shortlist of about 30 people - voting is from now until later in the month, i don't remember the exact date but anyone can vote! :) http://scotland.stv.tv/greatest-scot I chose Adam Smith because, well - he's the father of economics! ha ha ha!

I know that feelings all too well - both the living with the folks until being able to afford your own place and building up a sizeable 'to read' list ha ha. I have over 100 on mine at the mo!! hee hee!! Oh, i finally found the debate on youtube - it was interesting, although nowhere near long enough and a rather silly motion really, but oh how i love to listen to both Fry and Hitchens talk! ha ha!! Here is the link if you would like to watch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvZz_pxZ2lw&feature=related Enjoy!

I didn't watch it. I think they should scratch the game. In the past I found it fun to watch but it changed into an exhibition. Maybe they could have an all star weekend with skill tests and fan participation.
