About Me
Well, I've got a PhD in Marine Biology.

Still trying to figure out how to use that to get a job.

I specialise in artificial reef ecology (or specialised, I should perhaps say), and using stable isotope ratios to explore food webs. I also have interests in predator-prey interactions, and pretty much anything to do with marine ecology.

I never know what to put in these things to make myself sound like the kind of funky person you'd want to talk to, but if you want to find out more, just ask me!

Bus Wars

[Full versions of all my posts, including images and links, can be found on my blog, Artificial Habitat]

No doubt many of you will be familiar with the atheist bus ads around Britain and the fuss kicked up by a few whining Christians.

Let's not forget that they were a response to religious bus ads giving links to sites which bang on about eternal torment for non-believers.

Well, now they've started responding with ad

Weekly Science Roundup

[Full versions of all my posts, including images and links, can be found on my blog, Artificial Habitat]

Welcome to the first Weekly Science Roundup. These regular posts will consist of quick summaries of interesting papers, articles, and blog posts which I encounter during the preceding week (sometimes they may have been published earlier). The number of items that I mention will vary, and there will be an obvious bias towards biol

Hardcore Atheist meme

Yeah, I finally gave in and did it. But if you want to read it, this time you're going to have to go to my personal blog. I normally cross-post, but I don't have time right now!

8 Lessons and Carols For Godless People

[Cross-posted on Artificial Habitat, including links (which I haven't embedded here) and a selection of photographs from the Natural History Museum]

Yesterday (Thursday 18th) was my birthday. What better way to celebrate than attending a godless Christmas show in London (along with a visit to the Natural History Museum and over 4 hours of walking around London)!

Comedian Robin Ince was inspired by an encounter with the delightful Stephen Gre… Continue

Catholics don't have freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, say leading Catholics

[Cross-posted on Artificial Habitat]

The Vatican owes me another irony meter.

Here are a couple of occurances that will be familiar to those who have encountered Catholics in online discussions:

1) They often (always?) claim that any criticism of their superstitious crap by 'intolerant secular bigots' represents a concerted attempt to deny Catholics their freedom of religion.

2) Any comments to the effect that doctors, nurses, MPs, regist… Continue

I meant "AMAZING!?!?!?!?!?!" ... Sorry, I wasn't emphatic enough ;)

Things with me are going, I suppose. Still working on the same job lead. It's been about 1.5 months and I'm only just registering for training now. It's such a hassle, but at least it's something. I'm also still applying for all kinds of other positions, just in case I find something better. Otherwise I'm just gearing up for summer; lots of camping, possibly some cycling in the cards, playing a lot of softball, just generally enjoying the weather. No complaints really.

Still no success on the sexy men front - What about you? Any sexy men in your future, Andrew? ;) If so, sharing is caring. Just remember that.

Good to hear from you again. I like that you keep me in the loop! :D

Hopefully around August I should be moving. I'm just looking around for a flat right now.

I know what you mean with the excess chilling haha - I am like that too, I need a job and a new routine so that I can get out of this rut i'm in - even though i've been studying i've been unemployed for so long i've forgotten what it's like to work and cannot wait to get a routine and get myself out an about. Hopefully things will work out for the best in Glasgow!

Ah right, that's a long time to wait, huh? Oh well, here's hoping!!

I'm getting on great thanks - really looking forward to moving to Glasgow, I cannot remember the last time I felt so excited hahaha.

My exam is over now so I have just been totally chilling out haha.

Hi Andrew,

Just saying howdy again and wondering if you've found out about that Thurso job at all? Or any job for that matter! :)

hey! hear anything about the job? hope your trip went well and you had a nice time conversing with intellectual equals for a time ;)

Thank you! I'm not sure where the Ph.d will be at, I would prefer Aberdeen but you never know, I may not want to leave Glasgow when i'm there! hee hee. I'll just have to apply to several places and see where is willing (if any) to take me. ha ha.

Precisely. I do enjoy studying but I need to be working, i'm not getting any younger! ha ha ha! The Ph.D in Clinical Psychology is idea as it is like an apprenticeship almost, you know, training on the job sort of thing. I really hope I get in but no big deal if not I guess, will just have to go for something else.

Well whatever the reason, it sounds delightful. And it will surely be nice for you to talk science with some like-minded people for a change (and not having to suffer through conversation with us proles). I can't wait to hear about your adventure :) Let me know how it all goes. And when you get hired, see if you can find a job for a Canadian woman that knows nothing about marine biology, ok? I'm looking for a change of scenery. Wouldn't mind a jaunt to the UK ;)

It is true that many people take the path of religion to lead them out of destructive life styles. It is also true that people can do the same thing without a reliance on faith (you just don't hear about it as much). You sound like a very nice you…

I've seen posts about the 50 commandments of jeebus put out by xtians that cite chapter and verse and you really don't need a commentary to go along with them. Boy it sure does kill the whole GOP/Tea Party platform.

From the article Tommy cited. "However, religious commentators have criticized Hawking's theorizing, saying he can never hope to explain what is essentially unexplainable." Well doesn't that kind of invalidate their own "god" theory then? ;p

Wyoming is better than the southeast, from what I've seen. It's still a solid red state, though. My big point was that there are no cities. The closest it has are Cheyenne and Casper, each of which are around 50,000 people. The entire state barely…
