Are there atheists who celebrate Christmas?

Posted on December 8, 2009 at 9:37pm 7 Comments

I'm just curious how other atheists celebrate Christmas. I personally see Christmas as more of a tradition and a time of year to be thankful for the wonderful things and people I have in my life. I watch Christmas movies, sing carols, and put up a tree. But I'm starting to feel like I'm not being true to my atheist beliefs. Is it a conflict of interest to be an atheist and still participate in Christmas activities?

Greetings, Amber! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

I'd say: "No conflict between atheism and wishing everyone joy at christmas---but why not call it Newtonmass." We know that the great scientist Isaac Newton was born on that day whereas no-one knows the date when Jesus was born.
Any how, welcome, Amber, to this super site and its bright people like you who recognise religion for what it is---nothing but a great fraud. God exists only as fiction inside people's heads, and nowhere else.
