Virginia Lawmaker: Children with disabilities are God's punishment to women who previously had abortions

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/02/22/disabled-abortion/This is exactly why I have an issue with religion getting its hands into politics. And what about women who have never had an abortion yet have a child with a disability? I guess he thinks God is just punishing them for fun.See More

"I don't think its a conflict of interest at all. Christmas is actually a pagan tradition, and the date Dec 25 is most certainly not the date Jesus was born, and most theist or creationists will not claim that it is. In my opinion, its simply a…"

Are there atheists who celebrate Christmas?

Posted on December 8, 2009 at 9:37pm 8 Comments

I'm just curious how other atheists celebrate Christmas. I personally see Christmas as more of a tradition and a time of year to be thankful for the wonderful things and people I have in my life. I watch Christmas movies, sing carols, and put up a tree. But I'm starting to feel like I'm not being true to my atheist beliefs. Is it a conflict of interest to be an atheist and still participate in Christmas activities?

Greetings, Amber! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

I'm originally from Oklahoma City. Still have family in Ok. Undergrad degree from Univ of Central OK in Edmond. Worked and traveled much of the world before retiring in Sun City, TX. Envy the fact that you realized your atheism so much earlier than I did. I didn't really come out until about 3 years ago and I'm 59 years old now. Oklahoma is one of the more parochial places I've ever lived. Don't think I could ever live in OK again. I would think it might be difficult for you there if you are open about your beliefs. Sad, isn't it? Sort of the same for me here in Sun City, TX.

I'd say: "No conflict between atheism and wishing everyone joy at christmas---but why not call it Newtonmass." We know that the great scientist Isaac Newton was born on that day whereas no-one knows the date when Jesus was born.
Any how, welcome, Amber, to this super site and its bright people like you who recognise religion for what it is---nothing but a great fraud. God exists only as fiction inside people's heads, and nowhere else.
