Happy Birthday, Alex!

I have to agree with the science passion too! Here's an interesting thought I had (I wrote about it in my blog awhile back) relating to science and religion:

Religion is based on premises. Why should you be a Christian? Because Jesus Christ sacrificed himself on the cross to forgive your sins, and you'll go to hell if you don't. Why do you have sin? Because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Who are Adam and Eve? The first people God created when the world was built in 6 days.

It's built like a stack of cards. Premise upon premise. With science, we know the earth was not formed in 6 days. We know that people don't rise from the grave. We know that snakes don't talk, and that there are no magical trees, and there's a very likely possibility that Jesus Christ is the reincarnation of previous myths.

That's why religious people are so afraid of science... because once you pull out that card, the whole religion falls apart. Just a pile of cards that don't fit together anymore, and don't mean anything at all by themselves.

Gudday, I'm more into evolutionary biology as a consequence of my zoology degree so I'm reading 'Climbing Mount Improbable' right now, which is just fascinating.

Well, I think it started with Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn. Ever read it? While it was meant to challenge our notions that we're the supreme rulers of the earth, I took away from it the idea that humans need myths to give themselves purpose. I love reading mythology, so the Christian god was just another one that I added to the list. Took awhile for me to get there, but once I did, it was like a light had been turned on and I could never forget what I'd seen, even if someone turned off the lights again.
