I'm not even sure where to begin on this. The fact that this stuff is even controversial, even a subject of debate, is unbelievable. I'm just... wow, lol.
On the bright side, most of this isn't anything new, I don't think - a lot of the things A Beka Book et al teach have been taught to schoolchildren in the USA since at least the mid-1800s. And, in my own personal experience growing up in a…
I've been in this same predicament for a long time. I'm 22 and still haven't started college because I'm so indecisive. Nothing sticks out. But there are enough things in this world I enjoy quite a bit, and enjoyment is what I…
Yeah, that seems like a major misstep on Jacoby's part... I mean, couldn't she at least have found a book not written by a 4-year-old? And we don't even know why people are reading it. It's not necessarily because they think…
I want to second that this game is a blast. If you're interested in competitive gaming, too, IIRC LoL is a WCG game, so there's that.
Feel free to add me if you're looking for a Taric/Morgana. My username's…
I understand that change is slow, but the problem is that a lot of the problems we're seeing now we've been seeing ever since this country was established. Think all the whoring to private contractors in Iraq is new? Nope, that's been…
Well, you can say that - but if it's impossible to get rid of guns, then how did Britain do it?
I just want some real data here, not conjecture and armchair theorizing. Fact: Britain has strong, consistent gun laws and has one of the lowest…
You're right that poverty and the drug war are major contributors, but the point I'm making is that if people keep on stealing guns, just make it so that there aren't any guns to steal. As I've said elsewhere on this thread,…
Personally, I'm getting to the point where I want the USA to fail. Just let it all crash and hope that the EU and the East manage things better - they can hardly do a worse job than the US has done (well, maybe not China, except…
I do live in a place where shootings on the corner of my block are common.
Excellent reason to be in favor of banning all guns in all civilian areas - Britain doesn't have gun crime for a reason.
Raised as a member of the AUB (commonly known as the Allred Group), I deconverted at age 18 and became a full-fledged atheist/secular humanist around age 19. I'm dual majoring in Sociology and Gender Studies at the U.
You're probably right about us all being nerds here. Although, I tend to think of myself more as a geek, but the point remains valid. I'm not specifically trying to persuade nontheists of my views. I actually spend most of the time offline trying to persuade the "spiritual but not religious" crowd. They're usually my target market and I slowly dissuade them from supernaturalism of the various types. Although, I guess they too are a little turned off by the word religion. They generally agree that it is the level of organization, the form if you will, and not the content that defines religion.
As I say this, I realize that you might be right after all. I guess I am trying to persuade people generally that have been turned off by religion, because those that are happy with religion or seldom in the market for a new one, even a nonsupernaturalist one.
Ah, thanks for the correction. :) It was my assumption that atheists tend to be more skeptical.....or at least the ones who seek out other atheists to have discussions with.
The friend I was referring to in my story is actually atheistic towards the Christian god but still believes in the existence of souls and ghosts...I find that most people on these atheist websites are skeptical towards those types of things as well.
When I tell some people that I'm a skeptic, they assume that I mean "conspiracy theorist". Hahahaha.
