yeah. it's like that.

Just finished Ridley's the Agile Gene and started on his older piece centered around sex's role in human nature and evolution while on the train tonight... this current read goes by the name the Red Queen. I suspect that his other more recent book, Genome, might be more interesting... so maybe I'll jump to that instead of the Red Queen... we'll see.
In other news, I plan to attend a talk by Dr. Kenneth Miller on January 8th, 2009. Details: http://planitpurple.northwestern.edu/event/355032 -- Should be quite interesting and worthwhile, I hope.

"Grandpa" is Just a Word

Posted on November 25, 2008 at 3:00pm 2 Comments

I read this at my grandpa's funeral on 11/19/2008.

None of this seems real quite yet. Part of me wonders if it ever will. Another part of me wonders… if this never seems real, how will there ever again be such a thing as "reality"?

Guy Heintzelman was my grandpa. But that was just a biological technicality. There isn't a moment of my life that I can recall when he wasn't an integral piece of who I am. Be it picking me up from school, weekend trips to the… Continue

Dealing with Death

Posted on November 24, 2008 at 8:30pm 5 Comments

I'm 29 years old. I've never lost anyone close to me. My grandmother passed when I was seven. I don't recall much of that time.

Friday, November 14th, 2008... at approximately 5pm eastern... my grandfather took his last breath. It was devastating. I was crushed. Growing up, my father wasn't around except when he'd pick my sister and I up for our Christmas vacation and then for another week during our summer off from school. So my grandfather was the only father figure in my life… Continue

Cry for Education

Having been reading, watching, thinking, living evolution quite a bit over the last bit. I'm awestruck at how so many people who don't even understand the concept of evolution dismiss it as nonsense. To do so would hold a strong likeness to me claiming that some surgical procedures promise for success is utterly zero. While I may have some anatomical knowledge, it is… Continue

Social Reconstruction: Parts 1 & 2

Posted on November 5, 2008 at 2:37am 0 Comments

These are two pieces based on related thoughts written at different times quite some time ago... probably between 1.5 and 3 years ago. So it seems that the time is near... it feels good to finally be a proud American again.

Part 1

We need social reconstruction. I won’t even talk of reform, for it seems to imply that the current state of being is salvageable. While not all is bad in the current state, it will be easier to destroy what we have and build… Continue

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 6 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 20, 2013 at 1:09pm 3 Comments

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
