The map shows a lot of diversity within the states as well.  But that red center of the country....  it's like an intellectual desert.

Live in an area of southernmost Illinois, where it's 50-75% religious.  Didn't know that there were that many superstitious in Illinois.  Then again, my fellow citizens elected George Ryan (now serving time in a federal prison) and Rod Blagojevich (about to serve time in a federal prison), as governors.  I think people from Texas, New Jersey and Louisiana love Illinoisans. We keep them off the front page.
