Actually, as a big fan told me, a Trekkie, Gene Roddenberry insisted that religion would be the only taboo topic on the show.  Something tells me, though, that that guy with the pointy ears from some weird planet or other is a non-believer.

The Klingons and Bajorans both had religions.  Whether the Klingons' religion was for real or not is debatable, but the Bajorans "prophets" were as real as the wormhole that was apparently their home and which Benjamin Sisko experienced more than once.

Which sorta begs the question: how would we as atheists react to a SUBSTANTIAL, DEMONSTRABLE RELIGION?!?  Offhand, I'd say it would be out of this world, and in the case of the Bajorans, for sure!!!

I hope that is what the future brings!

On the other hand, didn't some of the Start Trek civilizations have religion?  The Klingons, Romuluns, Cardassians,, Bajorans?  To overanalyze a cartoon....  :)
