Comment by Loren Miller on April 22, 2012 at 6:16am Didn't their guy say something about giving everything you have to the poor and then follow him? I recall something about eyes of needles and camels, too.
Aaaah, he was probably joking. Yeah, that's it....
Comment by Kelly M on April 22, 2012 at 10:04pm What I have found so funny, every time I try to bring that point out Loren, is the answer I get back....which goes something like...the bible doesn't say a rich man can't get into heaven, just that it's pretty hard. Funny to me it says more very specifically about the rich, and way less about homosexuality and hell. Ohhh those funny christians. They really do just make shit up as it's convenient for THEM.
Comment by Nerdlass on April 22, 2012 at 10:29pm A lot of those folks think that the hereafter, this magical neverland they claim is there for those who believe when they die, is so much more important than life right now--that they'd justify the construction of mega-churches because "they reach the sheep lost in the night" and "bring people to christ." They're more interested in saving souls than saving lives.
That said, there are churches who feed the poor... I'm cool with that, minus the overhead--and not so keen on the prosteletizing... I have mixed feelings about the mission trips my mom's church sends out. They help the communities they go to witness to, but they still witness to them. I dunno... I just don't know how I feel about it... The group they sent to Japan last year were the first to really visit and entertain the displaced people in a town hit by the tsunami. They brought smiles to the people who went to see the show. That happened 6 months after the tsunami. Why weren't other groups going to pick up the smiles as well as the rubble? I had volunteered at the same area, but we worked directly on site.
I'm an ALT (assistant language teacher)... I think it'd be great to get other ALTs and go up there to do a bilingual skit for the people who are still very much affected by what happened March 11th of last year.

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
