The only intelligent filmmakers to tackle the Biblical epic were Nicholas Ray (King of Kings with Jeffrey Hunter) and the Italian communist, Pier Paolo Pasolini (The Gospel According to Matthew).  The former had the big Hollywood cast and a musical score by Miklos Rozsa, while the latter had unknown players and obscure Italian composers.  There is also the "Gnostic" Jesus movie, The Last Temptation of Christ, with Martin Scorsese and an adaptation of the novel by Nikos Kazantsakis written by former Calvinist Paul Schrader.  If history is the barometer, the Pasolini wins hands down: from what we know of the earliest Christians, they were communists.

They never shoulda made 'em like that in the first place ... and should we mention that the whole book of Exodus has been demonstrated to be pretty much creative fiction anyway?
