Sentient, yes, anyone who gardens more than a few seasons lives in the midst of evolution and may not even notice it.
Joan, the same thing happened with our columbines. They were all colors, now only the burgundy ones remain. Also my yellow-edged iris with white centers are now fully yellow, no more white centers. They used to me much more white than yellow. The full yellow is quite nice, actually. Evolution. Or something.
Yes, Sentient, I saw your lovely dark iris and wondered if it had common ancestry with mine. With iris, one never knows. In fact, the ones I dug from my grandmother's garden on the Salmon River had all turned blue, some darker than others. She had many colors of iris 60 years ago, but only the blue remain.
I may have the same variety, or very close. Elegant colors.
It is about as close to black as I could get. I wanted something very dark to put against a white wall and my friend had this iris. No, it is not fragrant.
By the way, Marian is a quadriplegic from MS and has been in a wheelchair for as long as I have known her ... more than 10 years. She was able to feed herself until two summers ago and now we feed her. A group of us women get together every Wednesday morning for Wise Women. You can probably imagine the chatter that goes on with a group of women who consider themselves wise. We used to meet at my house because I have a wheelchair ramp, but she is no longer able to get away from home except for doctor's appointments.
Her husband called this morning, Marian is in the hospital with excruciating pains in her chest, left arm and neck.
Oh my. The color of that Iris is stunning!
