It isn't healthy to run for office as an atheist. You would lose the religious vote.

You are correct.  Those laws are unconstitutional.  They are still on the books, though.  True enforcement would be difficult, to say the least.  Still, it's a statement of the prevalent attitude in those places.

How many atheists do you think are serving in any elected offices in those states>  Or nationally, for that matter.  Last I heard, the national count was exactly - one.

I suspect there are many more but they now to openly declare to be atheist is political suicide, just as being black or gay was inn earlier times.

These State laws have been declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in the 1961 case of Torcaso v. Watkins367 U.S. 488. The State's just haven't gotten around to taking them off the books. But, it's illegal to enforce them.

I haven't looked at all of the named references, but I suspect that some of them may date from the McCarthy era when "In God We Trust" Was added to our money and "Under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance. Both were a panic reaction to the "godless communism" that we were all taught to fear.

I don't think it should be constitutional - so it needs to be brought to court.

No taxation without equal representation(?)(!)

How can this be constitutional? Doesn't this violate my civil rights?

Really! So I can't run for office. Is Pa in the Bible Belt now?
