This is one lesson the atheist community needs to work on the most. There is anger and contempt and frustration which is reasonable and understandable and can be expressed in constructive ways. But it is also expressed in arrogant, mean, condescending and ritious ways which I find total "asshole" behaviour. Atheists can be just as big assholes as people from any religeion, especially in terms of smugness, belittling, smarter-than-thou, better-than-thou terms. Just stumble atheism and you'll find all sorts of mean spirited material. Not only does it make you an asshole, but you rarely convert anyone to your side while being a dick to someone, by telling them they are stupid and by showing them how smarter and awsome-er you are. It also makes atheists seem bad when so many are dissing and cussing at everyone else.

What is so brilliant about this is that all the major religions have this as the basic premise. The golden rule if you will.

I suppose we all have a right to be an asshole if we really want to be, but do we not have some responsibility to better the world and communities in which we live?

The Stop and Shop reference is a bit above my head. Is it just suppose to demonstrate that even the most basic tasks and interactions can be done with respect for others?

Pope Benedict XVI is one of the worst in history. Unfortunately, I live in an ex-communist country which adores him. The commandment should not be confusing to anyone who is a true atheist. Tne others should not visit this page.

Stop it. You are confusing the church-folk. Atheism does not prescribe behavior, and I will be an asshole if I want to--What do you think I am, a humanist?

Samuel, the point of this is to indicate that as atheists we need to not be assholes, due to the fact that as a whole the atheist community is usually known for its assholery.
