We see swarms of birds lifting out of the already harvested cornfields that are abundant here in Illinois.  Very cool!

They travel in flocks to avoid predators and also to take advantage of aerodynamics - and other reasons. Here's a good article on it. I remember learning about flocking behavior in class.

How do birds stay together in such patterns? Migratory birds present such beautiful sights and sounds. I wonder how they choose their leader, or if is leaderless? What happens to the very young and very old? Is there any evidence of compassion?
