I've been an atheist since I was 15, but only recently (June, 2011) began reaching out to atheist organizations to find like-minded people. Until now, (I'm 54), I had never met another atheist. I have 2 children, 23 and 33, both raised nontheistically. My mother is a fundamentalist who believes she is a prophet. I recently came out to her after years of estrangement due to her fundamentalism, and she accepts me as I am even though she believes that I'm going to hell, she's just glad to have me back again. This was a big step for her and me both. Coming out has been good for me.
Thanks, Cheryl, for the tip about the origins group. I see there are lots of interesting groups available. I'll probably join quite a few of them. I've only joined the parenting group so far - I have a 10 year old son.
I guess "Old Smiley" is better than "old grumpy bastard".
There are, I agree, some interesting (and very intelligent) people on this site; some of the discussions become very long and detailed on a wide variety of subjects - it is an enjoyable web site.
