    Spud, I read recently about a similar University of Maryland study finding that a "tight" to "loose" dimension is both "simpler and deeper than politics", and suggesting an explanation for the differences: "Tight states tend to have higher rates of natural disasters, greater environmental vulnerabilities, fewer resources, and greater incidence of disease. States without these threats can "afford" more deviant behavior, the authors conclude."

    I don't think any causation is one-way! "Tight" phenomena such as increased discrimination and abstinence ignorance-based "sex education" are themselves causes of poorer physical and mental health!)

    I was pleased to see that loose states were happier.

    I was surprised to see my state is relatively loose.  I know mormonism is not tolerant of difference, but it doesn't act on it's intolerant dogma like it used to.  However, I still think it would act on it's intolerance if it were to gain power.
