Atheist Morality

A place for atheists to discuss morality issues. What shapes your morality? What new perspectives have you found since abandoning faith (if you ever had any)? Is there any merit to religious moral authority?

Empathy represses analytical thought

Brain structure allows us to engage with others morally or to solve tasks logically, but not both. This explains why religious moral people find it difficult to be logical, why intelligent women fall for dysfunctional men, and why Atheists who are logical find it uncomfortable to be social and emotional. Where do we go from here, to foster BOTH brain functions?

We see neural inhibition between the entire brain network we use to socially, emotionally and morally engage with others, and the entire network we use for scientific, mathematical and logical reasoning.

Could we somehow foster the ability to "step back" from a situation or problem and recategorize it for the "other" network?

Is there anything in the brain analogous to computer multitasking (many processes running "simultaneously" on a single CPU or just a few), where resources are used alternately by different networks?
