What is new atheism?

New Atheism is the name given to the ideas promoted by a collection of 21st-century atheist writers who have advocated the view that "religion should not simply be tolerated but should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises."

The term is commonly associated with individuals such as Richard DawkinsDaniel DennettSam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens(together called "the Four Horsemen of New Atheism" in a 2007 debate they held on their criticisms of religion, a name that has stuck) and Victor J. Stenger. Several best-selling books by these authors, published between 2004 and 2007, form the basis for much of the discussion of New Atheism.

Do you know who John Hagee is?  He’s got to be on Youtube.  Can you picture this pompous, Porky-Pig hypocrite beginning his Sunday sermon to all the uptight, righteous Texan families, with “Pah.”?

I dunno.  Something just strikes me as hilarious.

Polyglot repertoire.  Beautiful.  How many languages do you speak?

Quandos idiomas hablas?

Quant de langues parlez-vous

>>Mord, I love "Pah!"  where'd you get that descriptive interjection?  Belongs in the movies.

I saw it many years ago in a film subtitle and added it to my polyglot repertoire. To good effect, I must say, as you are not the first to remark it. :-)

@ R. Goscicki:

They will uncritically eat up whatever chicken feed is thrown at their feet.

Here’s a funny one:  I often listen to the Christian Network; it’s on cable TV around the clock.  My idea is to broadcast Mordekhai’s beatific vision and insight:

(I can see fat, pompous Reverend John Hagee in San Antonio announcing to his flock in the jam-packed sports center.)

Pah! Just last night "god" told me that W. was a lying sack o' shit from a long line of plutocratic thieves and traitors.

I’m sure the parishioners will dig it.

What a difference a little time, effort, planning and money can do.

@ J. Martin:

Well, when it suits the sumbitch he'll be truthin' all over the place. No, really! Generally, though, he just makes it up on the spot w/o regard to fact.

I just have to get my 2 cents in here. I am anti-religion. Oh sure, I can be polite in civil society, and know people have different values than mine, but when imposed on by otherwise nice folks, I give as strong as I get. A polite "God bless you" results in "Don't make a blood sacrifice on my account!" "Have you met the Lord?" gets a response of "Which one?" and I can even have some fun with beliefs that just make no sense.
There are those who say I am an angry old woman. They are correct. I am mad! Mad as I can be! It is not my purpose in life to listen to myths, fairy tales, delusions, denial, domination, oppression, and fools.
A funny thing, I created a meditation garden in celebration of life and acknowledgement of the universe, and my Christian friends come over to pray. As long as they don't say anything about religion in my earshot, they are welcome. When their proselytizing begins, I react as honestly and precisely as I can. They keep coming back for the pure joy of my anti-theist garden.

Wait, Mordekhai, you mean God sometimes tells the truth?!

@ Richard, and yes, some atheists are even Republicans.  It's a shame Mr. Leman feels the way he does, but he will not be missed and should be warned, don't let the door slap your ass as you exit.
