What is new atheism?

New Atheism is the name given to the ideas promoted by a collection of 21st-century atheist writers who have advocated the view that "religion should not simply be tolerated but should be countered, criticized, and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises."

The term is commonly associated with individuals such as Richard DawkinsDaniel DennettSam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens(together called "the Four Horsemen of New Atheism" in a 2007 debate they held on their criticisms of religion, a name that has stuck) and Victor J. Stenger. Several best-selling books by these authors, published between 2004 and 2007, form the basis for much of the discussion of New Atheism.

I believe 9/11 was a bunch of disgruntled Saudi youth recruited by the "Old Man of the Mountain" to slaughter Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Twin Towers.  However, I will always find it curious that all the bin Laden relatives were flown out on planes when all other flights had been grounded, as were members of the House of Saud.  The latter have been close friends of the Bush Family for generations.

Gentlemen?

I appreciate the welcome. One small thing. The diminutives of my Hebrew name "Mordekhai" are "Motkha" which is hard for many Anglophones to say, or "Motti". "Mord" sounds to me too much like Latin-derived "death".

I haven't used my Hebrew name in years. I like it! ;-)

@ J. Martin:

Nearly all the American "aristocracy" realized that an interruption of the flow of profits from Europe was a worse catastrophe than finding ways to trade with the enemy in wartime. Ever drunk a Fanta?

Thanks, James.  I've always considered you a good friend.  We see eye to eye so often.

What's your view on 9/11?  I'm not a conspiracy theory type, but for the hellame I can't figure out how Building #7 went down two blocks away.

And how did the towers fall so fast?  faster than dropping a coin off the roof.  Less than 11 seconds.  And the fukkin' Florida election?  I get mad just thinking about it.  How could this imbecile get elected twice?

I assure Mord knows whereof he speaketh.  If you have read one of the many "Bush Dynasty" books you know why George W. was the way he was, how he got there, partly by currying the favor of the religious right.  But the books show just how true it is that W's pedigree is from plutocratic thievery (robber barons).  I donno about the traitors part. Chumminess with the House of Saud?  What's traitorous about that?

I just totally agree with Richard re: John Hagee.  He HAS to be the most repulsive creature to ever, EVER crawl out from under a rock.  I wish I had taped the time John McCain appeared on a raised platform for a photo op with Hagee, whose other elbow rubbed Tex. Senator John Cornyn.  Cornyn is Mr. Opportunist in person.  He got elected to the Texas Supreme Court by insurance company money and he left the law to politic for senate, again on Big Money.  While in D.C. he has lined his pockets so heavily it is amazing he move around with all that coinage.  After McCain realized who Hagee really was (I think his own daughter told him Hagee is to homophobia what Freud was to psychoanalysis and McCain at least has a conscience), McCain threw Hagee under the bus.  Not that shithead John Cornyn: he knew that Hagee's mega-church would be important in any reelection bid.  So he panders to this base element.  What I want to know is, when is the Southern Poverty Law Center going to put Hagee's church on its hate list?

@ Richard A cena eh?  I am headed for Isla Mujeres shortly and miss my meals in Mexico.  I will try to get back to the capital next year, if only passing through.  The City is a gourmet paradise: on my previous 10-day trip, I ate at a Pakistani restaurant that had the best tandori chicken I've eaten.  Another place had authentic Norteno style birria de chivo.  Like the guy on TV, "I'm here for the food."

There's a special kick for me in seeing Spanish-speaking atheists. Cristianismo has such deep roots in the culture that you forget that thousands of Jews and freethinkers also use it as their mother tongue.

When atheism makes serious inroads in Ibero-America we will have a vast reservoir of people declaring that they, too, will not be told what to think, say, or do on account of some celestial devil. And high time, too!

Mord, wonderful.  Good for you.  Languages are part of the good life.  I feel great just ordering la cena in a Mexican reastaurant.

@ R. Goscicki:

LOL @ Hagee Pig. PERFECT!

I am a native English-speaker. My Spanish is serviceable.

When I was a kid I realized I have absolute -AKA "perfect"- pitch. A natural-born musician. Started out on drums at age 10 and learned to play the guitar and eventually, to sing.

The gift turned out to extend to language acquisition. Started learning Hebrew at 9. Mopped up Spanish in junior high. Realized I could make sense of most Romance languages. Took some Italian in HS and German as well. I have a parrot-like gift for picking up accents. Once I said to a Russian fellow in a bar "Na zdrovye!" He started speaking to me like I was his brother! This has happened when I spoke phrases in French, Italian, Portuguese and Greek.

I can get my face slapped in Hebrew (which is NOT easy), start a riot in Arabic, and pepper my writing with Yiddishisms when talking to fellow-Ashkenazim.

I have a black belt in "mouth".
