Killer Phrases

Killer Phrases

Words that kill imagination, creativity, exploration, and wonder in children also provide challenges for adults to overcome.  Faced with real world problems, we need every critical thought we can generate, even if it is outside the box.

The phrases become killers when used to shut people down, stop looking for better ways, terminate exploration, and close down wonder.

Richard, glad to see you here. You know, before long, I am going to be able to understand "philosophy talk" and "logical reasoning" if you are willing to hang in with me. I am still working on your most recent piece, but I will understand your meaning before i quit.
How does your daughter feel about your precision of word choice and logical thinking? I like your answer to her that "I told you so" is never acceptable. She needs to stand up to that kind of tyranny and bullying even if it is from an adult.

Steph, it is great to see you on this line and help identify the ways we allow ourselves to be stopped or slowed down in our progress. As you can see, the list has been growing for some time, and with each new inclusion I see ways I can prevent barriers.

"Because I said so"

…I told my daughter this is never an acceptable answer to anything unless it's phrased differently and implies that an explanation is forthcoming.

- ex-wife hates me for this one.

"Well, that's your opinion…"

…as a supposed foil to a stated fact or valid proposition.

The ultimate in faux "respectable" dismissives...

"we agree to disagree"

Which doesn't really mean much more than STFU, in the context of a discussion.

Cool group! Hi everyone!

I asked god and she is pro-choice ... now that is what I call a pain killer!

As to "BEHAVE!"

Who is to behave whom?

Why?

How will we know?

Where will that get us?

When pigs fly!

Comment by Loren Miller on March 13, 2012 at 2:07pm

How about one single word:

BEHAVE!

Which reminds me of a phrase which may act as an anodyne:

Well-behaved women RARELY make history!

Usually, all "Killer phrases" have good and bad aspects, it depends on the situation; "Situational dependent."

A healthy individual is able to forgive, but if an assault occurs, she forgives, another assault, she forgives again, more assaults, she forgives each one, her forgiving becomes part of the dance of violence.

A good addition, Richard, yes, and "women should be silent in church"
