Justice For All

Atheists have our own ideas about what is just and what is unjust.  This group will explore the elusive concept of justice.  Topics include racial injustice, death penalty, imprisonment, crime, and other aspects of justice in modern society and in history.  Without gods, what is the basis for justice?  What do humanists and others say about justice?  What do you think about current controversies and cases regarding justice or injustice?

Welcome!

Troy Davis's photo was chosen as this original icon for this group.  Davis symbolized inequality of justice in the US.  At the time of his execution, 9/21/11, the evidence supporting his conviction was flimsy.  There was known evidence supporting his innocence.  He was executed anyway. Since then the icon is changed to represent justice in general.

There are different nontheist points of view about justice, punishment, penalties, death penalty.   There is strong support for retribution and execution in the theist community (in the US).

What serves as "justice" is not distributed evenly across communities.  The most egregious injustice has strong racial overtones.  If you would like to read about, and discuss justice, what it is, who gets justice, and who doesn't, and stories relevant to this topic, please join and contribute to the discussions.

Joan, wth time people tend to sort themselves out. The really aggressive ones learn who they can bully, and who they cant, and either go away or get barred. Demographics helps. When I was one of the only males in my building, the managers preferentially sent more violent or scary people to me. Now the demographics are more balanced and that happens a lot less. Plus Now I work with more older and sicker people who can see I care about them.

You are right about the need for optimism. We should be happy, and we should spread happiness. I tend to be very serious. and even now I have my passions. one is for justice. I repeat Ingersoll's happiness quote almost daily.

Daniel and Carl, you each write with wisdom and compassion. We live in very troubled times. Daniel, you working with such hostile people when your intention is to serve, treat and heal their ailments gives you reason to feel hopeless. and Carl, you are not in the safest of working conditions either. Yet, I imagine you both as carrying on with good humor and skill sets that prepare you for unexpected events.

If we succumb to pessimism, the pessimists win. I'd like to give them a good run for their money, not let them get me down, find positive ways to flourish and empower others to flourish. That may be a Pollyanna way of looking at reality, but when the day is done, it is a lot better to get up in the morning, do what needs to be done and go to bed at night knowing we gave it our best shot.

And, those fool gun slingers have a high probability of shooting themselves in the foot. Grateful for the image, Carl.

I sure would love to see Texas secede from the United States.  However, I'd be very worried about Texans illegally crossing the border and coming into our country.  We would need a patrolled border and fence.

Texas man in prison 34 years, without a legal basis for detention.

Intellectually disabled man, IQ of 51, convicted of murder, process used to select his jury was found unconstitutional 3 years later.  The logic is too twisted for me to understand.  The murder weapon is lost and the witnesses are dead.  He claims his confession was false.

The cop is claiming that they wrestled over the gun but I don't believe it. Sad...

Carl that video is hilarious! Thanks! Unfortunately his weapon was pointed downward, rather than at an angle towards... you know what.

Carl, you need really good teeth to eat that sandwich.

Guy accidentally kills himself while taking a selfie.

Sounds like something I would do.  Good thing I don't own a gun.
