Welcome to It Gets Better

Bullying and teen suicide are nothing new, but in recent years we have become increasingly aware of the damage bullying does ― to both children and adults alike ― with what seems to be a sudden spike in teen suicides related to being bulled.

The death of a child, particularly at his or her own hands, is never acceptable. It is a blight on human society that schools do not do more to prevent this, that parents can raise their children to be mean and spiteful to others, and that bullied kids don't have a support system on which they can rely when they are faced with feelings of despair and isolation.

The content of this group will undoubtedly be difficult to deal with. It is painful to see children ostracized from their peers, and made to feel as if they don't matter or don't belong. Of course, bullying is not confined to schools, either. Many adults experience bullying at home or in the workplace as well. All these issues will be explored in this group.

They are Richard! They are the worst of bullies in fact -- I know from experience sadly.

I wish JoePa could come back from the grave and beat the crap out of them.

I specialize in Ornithology in fact. My mom always had parakeets as pets when I was little and that it what started my passion for birds. You can learn much from observing wildlife and how they interact with each other. It was a quiet and calm bird - maybe that is why it was murdered.

Ornithology would be very cool to study.  I feed the chickadees and finches and other birds through the winter, and the hummingbirds in the summer.  I out out a wren house, and they made a nest in it and used it.  That a tiny hummingbird is a distant relative of lumbering dinosaurs is so cool!

Watching the hens in my yard, taught me a lot about bullying.  Strangely enough, the top egg layer, a quiet, calm Leghorn, was murdered by one of the secondary egg layers, a Rhode Island Red.  I say that because I later saw her standing on one of the shy, timid but larger Black Australorps pecking her feathers out.  I am not silly enough to beleive that the Leghorn was being picked on because of her performance, but I've jokes about it.  Ultimately that Rhode Island Red turned out to be a serial killer, also murdering 2 more pullets that I added, so I gave her away to my coworker.  After naming her for one of my (now former) tormentors at work.  I knew what her fate was going to be....  Chickens remind me of little T. rex's in their mannerisms and behavior, or I like to think so since birds are descendants of dinosaurs.

I also have 2 parakeets in my home office.  Their constant chatter gives nice background noise while I'm doing homework.  But they are very messy.  When they hear my birdsong CD, they chirp like crazy.

That is so true. I was ranked in my Ornithology class by the professor (why he chose to rank us I have no idea) I ended up being ranked number one -- anyway the amount of bullying I received after that was phenomenal. I was picked on any chance they got by fellow students. I thought that when I was an adult the bullying would end -- but I was astounded that it just continues. Even at work I would be employee of the month or something like that -- and I would get picked on again. And so -- the bullying continues for me.

Hi, again! Yeah, I went quiet over the holidays. LOL

I think of all things, it's an injustice to children for people to pass the buck and say "It's not my problem, it's so-and-so's because.."

It does get better for most of us, and for those who struggle even now, they show the fortitude of adaptation and sheer stubborn pride and towards those, I applaud heartily.

The Thinking Atheist just put out a podcast about coming out of the Atheist Closet and there was discussion about the correlation between coming out as gay and coming out as atheist. In fact... I think there's supposed to be a specific podcast that looks into that further. If I hear more about it, again, I'll toss in a word, here.
