Welcome to It Gets Better

Bullying and teen suicide are nothing new, but in recent years we have become increasingly aware of the damage bullying does ― to both children and adults alike ― with what seems to be a sudden spike in teen suicides related to being bulled.

The death of a child, particularly at his or her own hands, is never acceptable. It is a blight on human society that schools do not do more to prevent this, that parents can raise their children to be mean and spiteful to others, and that bullied kids don't have a support system on which they can rely when they are faced with feelings of despair and isolation.

The content of this group will undoubtedly be difficult to deal with. It is painful to see children ostracized from their peers, and made to feel as if they don't matter or don't belong. Of course, bullying is not confined to schools, either. Many adults experience bullying at home or in the workplace as well. All these issues will be explored in this group.

Thanks so much for your insight and helpful replies Sentient Biped and Loren. Hope you are having a good day.

Living well truly is the best revenge.  They hate that.  Their little reptile brains don't want to be forgotten and ignored, they want to know that you still hurt.  The best thing is for them to find that they had no power over you (even if they did) and that you don't thing about them in the least (even if you do).  If I run into them again I might tell them they look uncomfortable, express concern, ask if they are still constipated, and suggest prunes or metamucil.

It also sounds very much like at least a couple of the people I had to deal with as a kid [about a bazillion years ago].  Back then I had no defense against them.  The playing field has changed a mite since then.

That sounds like the person I was dealing with Sentient Biped. So glad I'm not dealing with them anymore.

I think some people are just plain mean assholes.  They bully because they can.  Sometimes.  They like the reaction.  They like the power.  It's the only way they know how to communicate.  They have a personality disorder.  They are constipated.

Richard here's a dark roast coffee for you - since the coffee group isn't working.

I just recently had to deal with a bully. This person was abusive to me for no reason. I severed all communication with that person. The weird thing is I didn't see that person as a bully first off. And I have dealt with many bullies before. Whenever that person did not get what they wanted from me the abuse would escalate. I guess maybe that is why I didn't notice it firsthand.

"A bully is a person who

has never learnt to accept responsibility for their behaviour
wants to enjoy the benefits of living in the adult world, but who is unable and unwilling to accept the responsibilities that are a prerequisite for being part of the adult world.
abdicates and denies responsibility for their behaviour and its consequences (abdication and denial are common features of bullying)
is unable and unwilling to recognise the effect of their behaviour on others
does not want to know of any other way of behaving
is unwilling to recognise that there could be better ways of behaving.

Bullying is obsessive and compulsive; the serial bully has to have someone to bully and appears to be unable to survive without a current target."

Why do people bully?
The purpose of bullying is to hide inadequacy.

Bullies project their inadequacy on to others:

a) to avoid facing up to their inadequacy and doing something about it;
b) to avoid accepting responsibility for their behaviour and the effect it has on others, and,
c) to reduce their fear of being seen for what they are, namely a weak, inadequate and often incompetent individuals, and,
d) to divert attention away from their inadequacy - in an insecure or badly-managed workplace, this is how inadequate, incompetent and aggressive employees keep their jobs.

Richard do you have a link to that "Bullied" video? If it's not online -- I might think about buying the DVD. I think I'll check Amazon for it.

Thanks!
