Whether it's a new baby, adoption, triumph over adversity, a medical diagnosis, a success, or a loss. Celebrate, or grieve, the loss of a loved one, respected mentor, role model. If it moves you, or you think it will move others, this is a good place to share the experience.

My family planted trees for births and deaths. Of course, there were official events too, like weddings, chili suppers at church, barbecues if weather permitted, dinners, wakes and funerals.I used…Continue

Comment by The Flying Atheist on May 15, 2013 at 8:16pm Yup, I went to Millikin in Decatur...."Soy Bean Capitol of the World." Earned a bachelor of music degree. Had a lot of good friends I met in college there who really made the experience wonderful....people who were such an integral part of my life at the time. Very close friends that meant everything to me. I don't see any of those people anymore. It seems like lifetimes ago. So much has changed. I've been through a lot since then as well. There's been much in my life to be very grateful for but I've also had more than my share of downs in recent years. I've been able to weather the tough times but only with the help of family and, I think, with my own stubborn tenacity to survive.
Comment by Brent Feeney on May 15, 2013 at 6:44pm Wow, from the same area, huh Flying Atheist? =) When you say Decatur, I guess you went to Milliken?
Went to Decatur once, to visit an editorial board meeting of the Herald & Review long before Lee bought them out. It was an interesting experience, to say the least.
Comment by Brent Feeney on May 15, 2013 at 6:42pm He was proud of me eventually Sentient; without going into too many details, I was told after the ceremony that day that he wasn't going to go until his buddies practically got into his face and told him to go.
I think the more he thought about it, and the more he realized what I had done (especially after he stopped drinking heavily), he was very proud of getting that degree. I do know before he died, that mom told us that he was really proud of how my brother and I turned out, even though we've always struggled in many ways.
Comment by The Flying Atheist on May 15, 2013 at 2:23pm Congratulations, Brent. I graduated from college in 1987. We're from the same era. I was in Decatur, Illinois, a short hop, skip and jump from Charleston. I remember having a tremendous amount of pride (and relief) in my achievement as well. I have a very close friend, my age, who was also the first in his family to graduate from college. Indeed, I know that adds an extra degree of satisfaction and achievement.
Thanks for sharing your milestone.
Comment by Sentient Biped on May 14, 2013 at 10:26pm Brent, as the first in your family to graduate from college, I bet your dad was very proud of you. It's a very big deal! Congrats to you and a virtual pat on the back!

Comment by Sentient Biped on May 1, 2013 at 9:07pm Russell, thanks. It can take a while to get the report. Probably in 2 weeks.
The comments just flow with newest on top. As far as I know there's no way to interpolate between comments.
Comment by Russell Pangborn on May 1, 2013 at 9:07am Wishing you a speedy recovery Sentient.I hope you get good news from that pending report.
Not sure how to get a reply just below a comment in this forum.
Comment by Sentient Biped on April 29, 2013 at 10:29pm Joan, thanks for your concern.
I'm now 4 weeks out from surgery. The wound has fully healed. My system is working as well as it did before surgery. Except I have to eat every 2 or 3 hours due to reduced stomach size. One critical pathology report is pending, but I'm not thinking about it.
This is the new normal. Can't go back to "before". Mercifully, the mind has a strange way of erasing trauma - I know the things that happened, in detail, but it's like a story that someone told me.
Not as strong as before. Working on it. I had to get back to work, not because employer required it, but because getting back to normal life was needed.
Also hoping very much you are well and strong.
Comment by Joan Denoo on April 29, 2013 at 8:16pm Russell, learning of your mother's experience is a real positive bit of news. You obviously come from strong stock. I don't hike at 77. Does she like to laugh?
