Hi Joan - yes I was thinking of posting that article in a discussion, as I saw that one too. 

I will look into that question you asked me. I am sure there is research on it.

YES, BIRDS USE the usual twigs, grasses, and feathers. But apparently they use cigarette butts, too—or so scientists at Scotland’s St. Andrews University have reported after studying house finch and house sparrow nests in Mexico City. Why the used butts, which averaged 10 per nest? Seems the cellulose is just right for insulation and comfort, and chemicals present in them including residual nicotine, a powerful insecticide, help keep things pest-free.  Whoever coined the expression “birdbrain” to mean not a big thinker had it all wrong. Steph, while reading one of your comments, I ran across this piece telling of common lice species with common birds. I remember the article where birds pick cig.butts off the ground and use them for nest lining; the researchers suggested they were good de-lousers.
I wonder if one could put tobacco, burned or raw, into nest building material for the birds to use when making their nests. What are your thoughts on this?
