Morning Earth Healing Images 10.22.2012

"The prescence of the pileated woodpecker

overwhelms all else in my eyes.
He is the alpha bird I see,
a young male, whose ululating cry
rings out without an open beak.
How intense his eye, how pupil wide.
How profound his drumming spear
that names his realm
and hollows out my yearning ear."

I saw your question about bird seed. I get mine from Wild Birds Unlimited - do you have a store near you?

Wow Sentient - what beautiful pictures! Trying to play catch up.

They do look like House Finches - let me look at my Sibley Bird guide to make sure of the species.

Sentient, these are so beautiful! And in your own back yard. Jeez, I am full of envy! I love my sparrows and chickadees and crows and an occasional woodpecker. But these are just stellar! Just look at those pretty colors and shapes. Very nice.

Outside my window.  I'm no expert.  From the web these look like housefinches.  They love the nyger seed feeder.

This pic is via a little point and shoot camera, through a window that's not all that clean.  I have a hanging plant in the window so they don't fly into the glass.

Any thoughts on feeding birds for the winter?  I've been using commercial seed mix.  Then I read, some of the mixes have junk seed like red millet, but white millet is OK.  I also buy black sunflower seed and thistle.

*

Maybe next year I'll grow the sunflowers, but for the time being have to buy them.

*

I've been buying suet cakes.  It would be nice to make my own but as a vegetarian I don't want to buy animal fat.  Not imposing on the birds, just not wanting animal fat in my pots and pans and kitchen.  Some articles say Crisco is a substitute, but others say Crisco isn't "natural".  I don't buy the "natural" argument - how many birds in "nature" are eating cows and pigs?  But, I don't want to do harm.

 *

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting some vegetable shortening.  If I can find coconut oil I might go for that, assuming not too expensive. Any info on whether I'm helping vs. harming the birds, using those products?

*

Getting a lot of the following birds at the feeder.  Pics from wikipedia commons, my camera is too cheap to get good shots.

And multiple others I haven't identified yet.

and then

I just had to do a Muppets group

And I had to do a Tim Burton group

Love that funny Raven cartoon booklover! The Raven by Poe is one of my favorites. I just love Edgar Allan Poe! Thank you!
