Ooooh, Coulter and Malkin. But Palin gets me more, because her whole life, family, job, environment, speech, in short, everything about her, is so obviously, OBVIOUSLY, diametrically opposed to what she says. It's all just right out there, and yet all these people, women, too, even mostly, just slobber all over her. Yech.

Yes, and then, astoundingly, they are unaware of the irony. But even more important, so are all the women who would vote for them.

Isn'y ironic that they cry for the woman as a "little homemaker" while not being what they say women should be?

How can we ever explain the Phyllis Schlaflys, Sarah Palins, and Sharon Angles? And, shudder, with all this right-wing religious stuff going on, are we headed straight backwards towards The Handmaid's Tale? Scary, just scary. It would be so easy to slip backwards from the progress we have made. After Roe v. Wade, I thought the abortion issue was "settled" for good.

Sure, we have certainly made progress - very important progress. Just not enough for my druthers!

I used to think we'd be past all the stupid crazy sexist religious dumb what-have-you by now, and clearly I was mistaken in believing that everyone else naturally wanted progress too, and that women would naturally want equality.

When I was very young (like 7 or 8) and just realizing that the world simply treated me as less-than just because, I never would have believed how many women would actively maintain the kyriarchy and limit the freedoms of other women, and certainly would not have believed how fiercely so many still defend their "right" (and ours) to be less-than in 2010. That is insanity in my view.

But hey, look at this! Could Rachel Maddow or anyone like her have been in her position even a decade ago? That's progress.
Diana Comment by Diana on August 9, 2010 at 8:34pm
Well, it's easy to get discouraged by what seems to be a lack of progress. And maybe progress is in a way an illusion. We are always only human beings, and we all have plenty of evidence of how truly dumb we can be. But we do evolve, and we can change. I'm just getting overwhelmed by the daily evidence of how much bat-shit crazy stupid people are all around. They WANT to go backward, calling it onward and upward. Rachel Maddow's show tonight is calling my attention to a lot of that going on. Aarrggghh!

Young, I dunno...I'm 46. And I feel acutely shortchanged by our society's abandonment of the feminist ideals I heard about when I was very young (even if I myself act with as much freedom as I can take). I realize that to be at all surprised by backsliding is a fault in my progressive outlook. At the time, of course, I had no idea how deeply the hate and fear of females is entrenched in just about every society, and how insidious its perpetuation. It is yet another case of "follow the money," in essence.

That's awesome that you could teach and raise some aware thinkers.

You're right, women who want change must cover many fronts at once. I have been a teacher for many years, and I was thorough, but subtle, in my teaching of change and thinking beyond what they walked in with. I had to be careful, for myself, but anyway, early high school kids respond better to a nudge than a command. My grown children are feminist and atheist, and granddaughters are headed there, too.

I'm really enjoying my current role of outspoken old lady atheist, because nobody can affect my life anymore. Finally, finally, I can say and do whatever I want.

But you younger ones, you still have much to struggle for.

That's OK Arnab. Much quicker than the second coming of Christ. Wouldn't want to be hanging by the balls waiting for that to happen.
