Conversational Atheist blog

Charlie Hebdo

Even though I've been away from actively writing this blog/website for a while now, it's never left my heart (and the occasional technical glitch or new comments will send me here to diligently deal with any issues). I just wanted to post my support in the recent tragedy. As alluded in my previous blogpost, […]

Strategies for dealing with crazies

There have been a considerable amount of violent protests around the world in the past week or so. So, what to do? It is wise to think about whether your actions are rewarding or punishing actions. For example, if laws were successfully passed in Western countries that restricted free speech against the Quran or Mohammad […]

Atheist Response to Rabbi

The Huffington Post recently posted An Open Letter to the Atheist Community by Rabbi Adam Jacobs. The reason behind his letter is "so that we can understand each other better and possibly "walk back" some of the clamorous dialogue." Sounds reasonable enough -- let's see where this goes. I'll be quoting from his letter throughout […]

Can morality be scientific?

Image via Wikipedia There has been some back-and-forth in the comments of my blog, and I wanted to let the discussion out for a bit more air. Jason has been arguing that he thinks that Sam Harris fails to make the case for a scientific morality. I think my criticism is more damaging to Harris' […]

Homosex is immoral -- an atheist responds

Image via Wikipedia I recently walked through a large hostile crowd that had formed around a small group of Christians holding signs talking about the evils of homosexuality. The people surrounding the sign-bearers were largely upset about the signs -- probably a number of Christians, and definitely a number of atheists, as well. The interactions […]

Could we possibly get this discussion moved into a single thread, so as not to blow up other people's inboxes with comment notifications?

Yeah, I like the part before that, in which he says that's not what he said at all.  No, it's exactly what you said.  Your detractor just put the slightest spin on it to make you see the ridiculous side of what you said.

@ Joseph P - Someone was ripping on "poor" Joel in his 10 part series on "rethinking evil". Joel's last response so far was: "Please see our comment policy to see that we do not allow trolls." Nice come back, Joel! My head spins reading this stuff quite honestly.

"And this has the new atheists scared. They don’t understand how someone could believe in a “magic sky fairy” or a “flying spaghetti monster” and then declare such a belief reasonable. It’s because they don’t really understand theism, nor do they understand the arguments behind theism."

Heh, wow.  That's about what I expected.  Don't understand the arguments behind theism ... wow.

@Joseph - Read Joel's bio. He's saving his money for a masters in theology. He also spelled PZ's name wrong which was brought to his attention numerous times in the comments.

I was going to go back to this article though:
