In my opinion, Jennifer, the first thing is to link up with others offline, like we're doing. Then comes making our presence known, either through advocacy or volunteerism. Letters to the Editor of various newspapers (I happen to have followed my own advice once on that, just hours after moving into our new house by sending one to the Journal News re: Jesus & Christmas; see http://www.atheistnexus.org/profiles/blogs/moving-to-god-s-country-...), contacting congressional representatives, and much more. But even just networking and socializing with each other makes a difference, even if it is just social. Not everyone's an activist.

what shall we do?  I have a child in public school, my hope would be something to counter-act all the X-mas krap in December---that is NOT holidays around the world.  They think if they give lip service to Hanuka and kwanza(!), etc thats good.  The idea of reason never seems to occur to anyone.

Greg, I think many of us share your concerns. But, as they say, there is strength in numbers, and we're becoming more focused and cohesive. We can make ourselves heard!

Hello everyone. Just wanted to add my voice to this group and say that I am an atheist living in southern West Virginia. Being an atheist can be tough in WV (particularly in the more rural areas). I know that my high school did not respect the separation of church and state in several instances and let students bully their gay classmates with little to no repercussions. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I am in the east,  would've thought given my (relative) closeness to Washington DC, that there would be oodles of others, but if there are, they are hidden.
