Mike, I would hope she wouldn't mind that. It's a very touching sentiment, and I know I wouldn't mind.

I just sent this message to a dear friend of mine... she was agnostic... then her dad died 2 years ago, since then her husband left her, drama drama drama drama, she started going to an evangelical church...

Her uncle died last week, her Grandfather is dying in the hospital now, and all her new church friends are praying for her...

I sent her this on facebook:
"Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us."
— Neil deGrasse Tyson

My thoughts go out to you at your time of loss.

No one is forgotten, as long as we remember.
I hope she's okay with that.

Brad, there are at least 3 groups in Northern VA who are fairly large. The is Beltway Atheists, Capital Beltway Atheists, and Loudoun Atheists. For Spanish speakers, there is a new group: Librepensadores de Northern VA (Librepensadores=freethinkers). These groups have meetup.com sites (which I strongly recommend you use if you don't already) where they set up happy hours, meetings, etc. DC also has others, but that should be good to get you started. Let me know if you need any other info!

Hey all!  Are there any Atheist groups in the Northen Virginia area?

LOL @ Aiden's comment. You can't walk around the corner of a church without seeing another one (it's true in some cases).

You can hardly throw a rock around here without hitting a church, so yeah, it would be nice if the state could tax their land holdings, but I don't know of any initiatives being pushed to do so.

I realize Virginia is facing some real financial challenges due to the falloff a tax revenues.  Does anyone know of any initiatives within Virgina to start taxing churches?  If income taxes are out of the question how about real estate taxes?  Virginia has a number of mega churches on prime real estate which could become a great source of revenue.

Well, we're a very welcoming group. I'd be there, but I'm on night shift until the end of this month.

D, in case you want to go with other atheists and skeptics, the Peninsula Skeptics meetup group already has this scheduled as an event. They'll be having dinner at Marker 20 before the event, which is right across the street.

Welcome to VA, Heather.

There are actually at least 2 meet-up groups in the area: the Tidewater Atheists Group and the Peninsula Skeptics. Despite the name, the Peninsula Skeptics is not restricted to residents of the peninsula (or to just atheists/agnostics, for that matter), as we have quite a bit of crossover membership between the two groups with members living on both sides of the water.
