Norway is quite secular compared to most states in America. I would dare to say around Brittish in numbers. The problem is finding people taking atheism and veganism seriously as something that needs thought to avoid, engage. It feels like vegans/vegetarians are connected to the original hindu/buddhist/new age movement from the 70s still, which makes atheists avoid it and visa versa. So in the end it seems like most vegans and atheists here in cold Norway are anti-racist punks. Which allthough can seem fun on paper, is not quite my cup of tea in reality. Allthough they have my moral support in most of their actions.

Hello, I am lonely. Imagine that, I know only one other vegan atheist in Norway. So I am hoping to find some caring people in reality here.

I'm pretty much a lifelong vegetarian. Instead of "eat your veggies", it was "eat your meat". My mother gave up trying to get me to eat meat sometime when I was around 10. I never could stand meat, not even the smell of it, and I do love animals.

Michael, since there is less vegetables in your country, try getting your protein from other sources. Vegetable sources of protein, such as beans, nuts, and whole grains, are excellent choices, and they offer healthy fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Hey, I'm your 100th member! Sweet.

I'm an ovo/lacto/pesca veg (or what I call "vegetarian-lite") since about...a year and a half ago, ish. It was reading Fast Food Nation that made me decide, but I'd been thinking about it for years. (First time I tried to go veg, I was 8, and it lasted about 2 days. XD) It's a little bit of every reason - health, taste, politics, environmentalism, biophilia... and I am of the opinion that a lot of meat- or dairy-substitute food tastes better than what it's supposed to resemble! Even though my partner is a meat eater, he still loves a lot of the veggie/vegan stuff that I eat and says it tastes the same to him. Yeah, he's cool.

In India, there are many vegetarian Villages. I am lucky being born in such village.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to post this recipe I love from the cookbook Veganomicon. I bake the cutlets instead of fying. I also use a pastry cutter to mash the chickpeas. Enjoy.

Chickpea Cutlets (4 servings)

1 cup cooked chickpeas
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup vital wheat gluten
1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
1/4 cup vegetable broth or water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1/2 teaspoon lemon Zest
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon Hungarian paprika
1/4 teaspoon dried rubbed sage ( I omit)
Olive oil for panfrying

In a mixing bowl, mash the chickpeas together with the oil until no whole chickpeas are left. Add the remaining ingredients and knead for about 3 minutes, until strings of gluten have formed.

Preheat a large heavy-bottom nonstick or cast ion skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, divide the cutlet dough into four equal pieces. To form the cutlets, knead each piece in your hand for a few moments and then flatten and stretch each one into a roughly 6 x 4 inch rectangular cutlet shape ( I make circles). The easiest way to do this is to first form a rectangular shape in your hands and then place the cutlets on a clean surface to flatten and stretch them.

Add a moderately thin layer of olive oil to the bottom of the pan. Place the cutlets in the pan and cook on each side for 6 to 7 minutes. Add more oil, if needed, when you flip the cutlets. They're ready when lightly browned and firm to the touch.

Just in case you were wondering, you can also bake these too. Baking these patties gives them a toothsome chewy texturew and firm bite. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, lightly oil baking sheet. Brush both sides of each patty with olive oil, place on baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Flip patties and bake another 8 to 10 minutes till firm and golden-brown.

I serve the cutlets with salsa on top and make roasted root veggies like parsnip and sweet potatoes for a side dish. Vegonomicon is a really good cookbook. It has alot of good recipes in it.

I became a Vegetarian on December 10, 1982 when I got my first apartment after graduating from college. I was working as a zookeeper at the time and decided that feeding them during the day and eating their cousins in the evening did not seem right. I became an atheist in 1966, in the second grade at a Catholic School. I have been happy with both decisions ever since.

I became vegetarian about 5 years ago. I really enjoy cooking using alot of different grains. It is the best way to eat!
