I also feel I could fit into any UU congregation, because if something is not right there, we believe in the democratic process & can discuss problems & change things. I blog about why a non-believer might want to go to church on UU-mom.livejournal.com.

I'm sure I could fit in any UU congregation no matter what was preached there.  I've always loved them.

I prefer them over the MCC and the UCC which were nice but too Christian-oriented for me.

To Christi C, thanks for sharing. I agree, better late than never. :)

I wouldn't say that I don't like UU. It's perhaps more like the small group in my home town isn't a really good fit for me. While perspectives do vary among the membership, most do believe in some form of higher power.

This takes the form of monotheism, polytheism, pantheism and so on. Some believe in astrology, tarot cards and aura readings. Sort of New Age-y. (Is that a word?) At this point in my life, I've come to believe in a natural universe - no supernatural aspect to it at all. I guess you could say I'm a secular humanist.

For that reason, I don't really feel like I fit with the local UU group. To me, so many believe in some form of supernaturalism and are trying to find a deeper meaning to life. It seems difficult for many people to accept that they are here not because of some outpouring of love from a creative Universe, but simply because of natural forces of physics, chemistry and biology.

Perhaps if there was a UU group that acknowledged we're here due to natural causes and not to some supernatural source, I'd like the fellowship.

I don't feel that way at all, but I was raised UU so I feel kind of lucky in that sense. What is it about UU that you don't like?

Just out of curiosity, is anyone going to Louisville, KY in June for General Assembly and was anyone in Phoenix last year for the immigration justice thing?

Happy to find this group in Atheist Nexus. I'm currently a member of a small UU Fellowship. We meet twice a month and members lead discussions. But I've been thinking about leaving the group. Lots of discussion about various spiritual practices among a group that includes pantheists, folks who actually believe in astrology, followers of wiccan practices etc. 

I've been attending after getting out of Christian churches. I eased out from fundamentalists churches, to liberal churches, to New Thought teachings, finally to UU. I'm kind of feeling like it's time to leave the UU behind. I think I may be sticking around just to socialize with people. Anyone else feeling similar emotions?

We have a really nice place also. I prefer to call it UU Center opposed to church. Our congregation is less then 15 years old but we built a new church/center from the ground up about 3 years ago. It is in a beautiful wooded area on a large lot with the closest neighbor being a college.

Hi Sunflower and welcome. Glad you found a congregation you like. Some congregations are more theist than others. I was lucky to join a newly organized congregation with a very large Atheist and Agnostic membership. I have visited other UU churches over the years and if some of them were my first UU experience I may not have returned to any UU church. Not that they were bad, just too Christian for me. Unfortunately there are not that many churches in most areas for people to compare a few. But I always tell people that are considering checking into UU is to try more than one congregation if possible and even go to the same ones more than once since they can be different from week to week.
