"Why Atheists Come To Church" - Part 1

Then you can see Part 2 and Part 3

Going to the UU church this weekend and the topic is "Bible Study for Skeptics." It sounded too good to miss, and I am hopeful.

Joke: You know what you call an Atheist with children?

A Unitarian Universalist

My parents were also Atheist (though my mother was more Agnostic than my dad) and very active in the UU church in El Paso (there is still a plaque there from 1972 with my father's name on it). When I'm talking to people about UU, I always point out that each UU congregation is different and if you don't like one, try another (and go at least twice because things can change from week to week).

I used to tease my girlfriend about being a UU. "Isn't that the church for atheists who haven't figured out they don't have to go to church anymore?" But, I have found so much value in being UU. There is always a value to community

Link seemed not to work. Meh, search for unitariansa in youtube if you're curious.

Hey, I've been a Unitarian for a few years now (Adelaide Unitarians). I'm a social creature and the Atheist/Skeptic communities while great just weren't cutting the positive as much as they were railing against the negative. We're working on it ^_^. The UUs though cut the positive strong and hard, engage in dialectic communication and actually seem to make a real difference in the local community.

I also love the idea of putting our differences with theists aside for a common good, but then I'm a hopeless diplomat. Fight Ideas not people.

It helps that our Lay minister is an Atheist and our main minister is ... theologically ambiguous. A deist would be too strong a word for her, an agnostic to wishy washy and an atheist too specific. Her husband is a straight up and down naturalist like myself ^_^.

Services are mostly secular though we dip our toe into the crazy occasionally to see what it feels like I guess. see for yourself:

Loving it here already, thanks Mike.

Hi Mike. I didn't know about this group. Thanks for starting it.

I've joined because as a Naturalist (Atheist) and a sometime attendee of UU, I'm a fan of UU's positive celebration of life, but somewhat perplexed by it not taking a stand on superstition. Humanism on the other hand, has the right philosophical grounding, but in practice, all too often boils down to meetings that simply rail against superstition. I want a community with a solid non-theistic grounding and a hearty celebration of life, love, nature and community. It is a vision I have had for many years, but finally want to start a dialogue about it. For any of you interested in this idea, I would like to hear from you; I call it Anthropa. Maybe UUism + Humanism = Anthropa.

Join the group here on Atheist Nexus and become a charter member:

Hello.
I've been involved with UU for over 10 years. Actually was part of the group starting up a new congregation...Still trying to define what it is and why I'm there. Not really looking for life's answers... more trying to figure out the questions are.
