I can understand the discomfort of visiting a congregation where you don't know anyone. Did you check out their site? Maybe you can meet some people there through social media and then feel more comfortable about attending without your friend. Some UU churches are more social network savvy than others & some are more friendly than others &, unfortunately, few are very racially diverse, though it's improving and we're being intentional about it. It might not be a problem for you living in Montana, but I see you're in the Black Freethought Forum, so I guess it's not totally irrelevant. I'm currently reading Mark Morrison-Reed's book "In Between: Memoir of an Integration Baby" who is a lifelong UU, now a retired minister in Canada. There are also these sites that might interest you:
