Do you recommend it? Liked The Prince by Machiavelli alot. But not crazy about many of the philosophers, though I love philosophy. Loved Ayn Rand, too.

Comment by matt warren on May 23, 2011 at 11:10am I see a lot of talk about philosophers here but not a lot of philosophy.
looks like more of a fan club than a philosophy group.
Comment by Jedi Wanderer on January 11, 2011 at 11:52am On the subject of Plato:
The deeper your understanding of philosophy gets, the more you realize who you like and who you don't, and why. I too started out believing that I was not too much of a fan of Plato and preferred Aristotle because he rejected what Plato embraces, which is a transcendant, supernatural world which is used to explain things here on earth. I must say, however, his metaphysics aside, Plato is steadily becoming one of my favorites to read. I just finished a paper on "Symposium" which, if you have not read it, is a delightful book on the subject of love. Plato was wrong about many things, but he should be forgiven and his place as easily one of the best philosophers of all time should be acknowledged.
For those that don't know, "Symposium" is about a group of 7 people or so (one of them is Socrates), sitting around on couches in a living room, drinking wine and each taking turns praising the god of love, Eros, in their own manner. Pretty freakin cool plot, wouldn't you agree?
Comment by Anne Ockershausen on January 8, 2011 at 10:19pm Speaking of how great a philosopher Jesus was, anyone seen a film called "The Man From Earth"? You can watch it on Netflix. It's a really, really great and provocative film. It is filmed almost entirely in one location, a small room, as a discussion between 7 or 8 old friends in a single evening, yet it is immanently watchable. I won't spoil things, but do try to see it - if you can't, at least google it.
