I totally agree with your comment about pets - when you take an animal to the vet that is clearly in pain and dying they usually say "it's the right/humane thing to do" - so why is it different for people? Personally I find it comforting to know that it's possible to avoid a painful and drawn-out death. I suspect that a large part of the opposition to suicide stems from organized religion, here is an article that talks more about this:
