The Childless and Godless

This is a group to discuss the joy of being childless! I am amazed at the number of atheists I have met over the past few years that are childless by choice, here is a place to discuss stories and experiences!

Do you see your mother as just an object because she dared to have you?

@PRG, as a 45 y/o non breeding female biologist, I agree with his outlook. I don't see pregnancy as a female choice, but as a patriarchal imposition. In our society, breeding is done for economic purposes, to keep the wheels of the machine rolling, women are but units of production, and I work for that not to be so.

I do find breeders offensive, to a certain degree, a degree similar to the offensiveness as religious people. You see I have religious friends and breeding friends... both groups of friends know I have serious 'issues' with their life choices, as they have issues with my candor.
As for the child abuse... it need not be scary to be child abuse... it's the very principal of brainwashing a person who's brain is not yet fully developed, especially when it's taxpayer money paying for it. I find it worse when society does it than when the parent does it, though I hate both aspects.

I don't care much about the word breeder, but I think this sentence is pretty derogatory: "Having children is to reduce the woman to the status of an object, to make her a slave to the species. She becomes a "breeder," a machine for breeding." This mostly reveals what you think of women, Francois. Having children can make people a lot of things but it doesn't make them into objects.

It was child abuse to me.  Try living into your teenage years "knowing" you are an abomination because you are gay.  Fucked up.  Or how about being 10 years old and worrying about your atheist grandmother burning in hell...

I guess it would depend of how the indoctrination happens.  Maybe I am just naive, but I think it would be possible to get a kid to believe without scaring them shitless.  After all, they do believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

The term breeder is not offensive

That is like the racist saying that nigger is not offensive.  You are in no position to tell people who have children what term is offensive or not.

The only people who object to religion being called child abuse are atheist parents who have abused their children.

I am not a parent and I do not consider it child abuse.  i don't really like the term breeder either.

"...some here in the atheist community have voice concern that 'child abuse' is possibly too strong a term to use for this form of religious coercion... "

I have more than one friend who was raised in a strict fundamentalist home, and had nightmares for years because they were told in great detail when they were extremely young that if they were disobedient, talked back, complained about anything, that they would burn in hell forever.  They were also told that their little friends who belonged to different religions, or even different xian churches, would all suffer the same fate.

If that's not child abuse, I don't know WTF is.

Even making a litle kid say that awful prayer that contains the line "If I shoulld die before I wake..." is frightening.

I am so grateful to my parents for not pushing that garbage on me.

Yes children can be highly annoying... that goes without saying in this group. But one of the ideas I find even more annoying is religious child abuse. It's one thing to not breed, as I chose to decades ago, but it's another thing to watch the kids that are here, in public places, such as the school system, disciplinary centres, etc, who are forced and coerced into religious behaviour.
This is a blog, an archive, about religious child abuse. Though it is closed, for now, it still constitutes an excellent jumping point for anyone interested in the topic.

I know some in the non breeding community find the word "breeders" offensive... I like using the word, as it truly expresses my feelings on the topic. It's the same thing with religion as child abuse, some here in the atheist community have voice concern that 'child abuse' is possibly too strong a term to use for this form of religious coercion... I do not, I think it's a perfectly valid description of the action.

That's the problem, being child free / anti-natalist is such a spectacularly small group of people, that if we want to have our ideas to have any incidence at all, we must take them to atheists at large, and society at large... if we dare ;)
