There's always someone waiting in the wings to take over (jillian taking oprah's spot). I'm not sure about jillian being the next oprah, but I do like how she motivates people. I'm inspired by her. She definitely knows more than oprah about nutrition, but needs to be careful not to attack. That can backfire. Yes, i admit it, i do watch the biggest loser. Everyone has their own experiences, and i don't blame jillian for wanting to adopt, but like i said, don't get nasty about it.

I thought I might drop into this group from time to time. I'm not sure Im child-free entirely by choice - we talked about it and looked into it, but finally decided against further effort. The childed/child-free divide is an issue that affects us, so I thought I'd look here to see what other people think.

If they do change their minds, it never reveals itself in a positive/constructive way. And in those situations, it is (of course) the children who suffer the most.

I very much appreciate being able to ignore my biological "imperatives" and choosing the purpose of my life.

Ack, I get that "You'll change your mind some day." line all the time.

I tell people I'm saving my vacation time and some of my tax return for the old snip and save, and they never believe me. As soon as I find out how much my insurance covers, I'll be setting up a long, ice bag filled weekend.

Jo, I think it is probably because it is so expected for women to want children that many women never think of whether they really want any or not; they just think about when they "should" have children and end up having some at some point.

I also suspect that some women who don't want kids don't tell anyone that because they know it will be questioned or are sick of hearing, "You'll change your mind some day." I know I am sick of hearing that. I recently heard it from someone several years younger than me. I have started giving my main reason for not wanting kids (do not want to pass on a genetic condition that I have or make my own condition worse, which pregnancy can do), that usually shuts people up enough that they don't even ask if I want to adopt any.

At the doctor the other day, going over the whole medical history, "Have you ever been pregnant or had children?"

"Nope. Never wanted kids."

Doc's eyes open wide with surprise. "Really?!? Wow. I knew a woman once back in college who never wanted kids..."

A doctor. Looks to be in his 50s. Can only think of one other woman he's ever met that didn't want children.

Sad.
