More on the "identity" thing: it has disturbing implications too, since there are those especially annoying parents who live vicariously through their children. Making your identity revolve around your kid seems like it would lead to that.

I'm the only product of my mom (3 kids from 1 previous marriage, no remarrying) and my father (4 kids from probably from 2 different baby mamas, 1 he married I know for sure, remarried after I was born multiple times). I am just SUPER happy that they didn't marry each other, I don't think either would have had the money for a divorce...My father is an alcoholic sperm donating idiot...I can't even see how my mom put up with him for 10 years. I'm a proud bastard (even if my mother won't acknowledge the bastard part)!

I find it incredibly selfish sounding (more selfish than the other reasons to have a kid, which there aren't really selfless reasons to have a child anyways) that if you had a kid, you did so to learn more about yourself....They have therapy for that..and it probably costs less..

I don't know if I would completely agree that having kids takes away from you're identity but it certainly pushes one in different directions of personal development. I think the main difference is that with a kid you become reactive rather than proactive in personal growth. You don't develop by doing choosing your own path but rather by reacting to your child and all that comes with it.

Of course many people have kids without really knowing themselves and that can really stunt one's sense of self. They may learn who they are relative to other people (their children) but that kind of self knowledge isn't necessarily the same as knowing one's own identity.

Oh my non-existent deity Monkey...your poor sister! I too am one of 4...actually..I'm one of 9 (all half sibs, way older than me though, practically am an only child). I believe all but one of my sisters has offspring (only one of them has...only one), and I know one brother has 3 kids, one brother has none (he lives with me and my mother, he is vastly approaching his 40s >_>), and the other brother..I don't know about because my dad kept him a secret, so I know nothing about that one! And then there's me.....

I'm one of four children. All the other three have kids. When I ask them how they are, the first words out of their mouths are about what their kids are doing. No, I asked about you.
I agree with Prog Rock Girl, they take away your identity.
My oldest sister got me into a lot of music I listen to when we were teens. Now she only listens to the Wiggles and knows all the words to Barney!
