@Sarah Walton: Yes, I am. I am known there as Militant Bright. Lately, lots more discussion happening at the Forums than here.

@Charles Zorn: Hey, Charles! Are you one of those Guests I see lurking around? Thanks for keeping the New York group working. What have you all been up to lately, aside from what's obvious at the Meetup group?

@Bud: I am not a founder, but I have some small involvement in the Brights. I would grant that we do promote a certain style of engagement, and have a few projects, but beyond that, the Brights are a vehicle for collaboration among individual brights who seek to collaborate. BTW, bright != Mensa alternative! Our constituency is diverse, and united only by naturalistic worldviews and (presumably_ a concern for social and civic fairness. What is it that you had hoped to achieve with the Brights?

As one of the initial contributors to the "Brights" (that I thought at the time a needed alternative to Mensa), I soon found that organization a vehicle for its originators. It was ever thus ... .

Me! I am! I have been running New York Brights for a couple of years. I am distracted by grad school so I don't comment very much but I track the entire spectrum of our community and disseminate info. ravenously.

Secular Believers
The film Secular Believers provides an example of how secular beliefs can be included in a religious education syllabus.
It was made for the UK education system and its message is that beliefs, and believers, come in many shapes and sizes, and not all of them can be described as ‘religious’.
"Many religious people think that a secular society is a good thing, because it offers freedom of choice to everybody."

I will admit that when I first heard of the idea of being called "a Bright" I was a bit tentative, but after reading a few articles and contemplating the reasoning behind the initiative I am happy to say I have fully joined up and am even going to order a shirt or jacket or something to proudly wear.

Deepak was actually not terrible on that one, I found myself smiling at some of his insights. I think he's got a long way to go, though to proving that anything he's talking about is real and accessible. He seems to be getting at a kind of Thomas Aquinas type of theology currently.
