The Brights

Think about your own worldview to decide if it is free of supernatural or mystical deities, forces, and entities. If you decide that you fit the description above, then you are, by definition, a bright!

What is a Bright?

* A bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview
* A bright's worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements
* The ethics and actions of a bright are based on a naturalistic worldview

* We promote the civic understanding and acknowledgment of the naturalistic worldview, which is free of supernatural and mystical elements.
* We gain public recognition that persons who hold such a worldview can bring principled actions to bear on matters of civic importance.
* We educate society toward accepting the full and equitable civic participation of all such individuals.

Daniel Dennett talks about the Brights movement.

"Believing there is no God gives me more room for belief in family, people, love, truth, beauty, sex, Jell-O and all the other things I can prove and that make this life the best life I will ever have." -Penn Jillette, active Bright of "Penn and Teller" fame

Members in the DC area may be interested in a Sept 8th (2-4 pm) Maryland-DC chapter of WASH (Washington Area Secular Humanists) free panel discussion on the Topic of: "What would Paul Kurtz say?” Our Panel: Margeret Downey, (founder & president Freethought Society), Edd Doerr (President @ Americans for Religious Liberty), Stuart Jordan (President of the Institute for Science and Human Values,, and Nathan Bupp) ISHV Communications Director). In a long and extraordinary career as a public intellectual, Paul Kurtz has distinguished himself as a major contributor to secular humanism, critical thinking, ethics, skepticism and American philosophy. Kurtz’s noble life, as well as, numerous, seminal writings about these topics are worth reflecting on. To this end a panel of people who know him well will be on hand to discuss this and his effects to build a constructive secular alternative to religion. It's at the Wheaton library. see http://www.meetup.com/capitalskeptics/events/79113232/

Hi everybody. My Name is Dave Kilby (aka Grouchy).

I do a blog at "Grumbles From an Old Grouch", http://grumblesfromanoldgrouch.com about politics, atheism, culture and life in general. The blog is written as someone who has been there, done that, bought the t-shirt and used it to wipe up the mess.

I'd like to extend an invitation to check it out. I especially recommend the posts: The Theory of Evil-ution vs The Mythology of Creationism (pts 1 & 2). They're a common sense, and rather humorous (I hope) takedown of creationism. It's absolutely free, and if I might add, worth every penny.

Upcoming (after I finish my "Tea Potty" series) will be a post on "The Religious Wrong" and the history of religious reactionaries.

I also have a page on Facebook: "Grouchy's Grumbles"  https://www.facebook.com/GrouchysGrumbles.

When you check them out, let me know what you think. if you like them, tell your friends. Heck, if you like them, tell your enemies. It might give them something to think about (provided they can think.)

War, oppression, domination, exploitation, manipulation = an all too familiar theme in our news and daily lives and even the news distorts and propagandizes.  Religion, all religions have failed to civilize people. Where is compassion?  What happened to ethical and moral codes under the influence of religion?

A very basic, straightforward example of this is what is happening to  Bradley Manning, the Army private accused in the most famous leak of government secrets or to the people and policies that put him in his dilemma of watching films and reading documents that clearly were violations of conduct of wars. This film reveals what happened and asks who is guilty? What moral compass does the USA use to make decisions?

What role do/can atheists play in establishing war conduct? From where does our moral and ethical foundation spring?

I'm a Bright! (...and a Secular Humanist, and a New Atheist, and a Naturalist, and ...)
There's a YouTube video poll on "Does Prayer Work?"
posted by a young non-believer who's still trying to figure out what to call himself. I can relate.

I’m really ticked off now…..BIG TIME!

Last night I expected all the “rapture”  yahoo’s to be gone.  All I expected to find was a bunch

of clothes, empty house, apartments, mobile homes and the like.  Cars just left on the street with the keys in them.

I had planned to go out looting. I was gonna clean up with the cash they left behind, their valuables, jewels, precious metals, silverware, electronics and the such.

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I even had a SHOPPING LIST!

And I had a list of things my friends wanted…..  Of course, there were some prescription meds certain friends wanted me to get for them…. And some things that weren’t prescription as well….

It only goes to show you, you can’t trust these “rapture” clowns….

Sigh……..back to clipping coupons….

If today wasn't fools day then i would say Bye Bye to turn back to the world of spirits and souls, in other words you intend to go back to the mythical world. Its only the blind in the mind that can change their minds and denounce Atheism. Its such a nice life instance that suits Humanity!.

I see a lot of people registering here; how many of us have also registered as Brights at the website www.the-brights.net ?  It would be nice if people would say what they're up to!  What's your local situation?  Are you taking any action "as a bright"?
