Has anyone ever noticed that "bright" can also describe the feel of everything produced by the organization? And I mean that in a bad way: as in, "That's too bright; it's getting on my nerves." When I read the newsletters I sometimes find myself fending off images of Care Bears. Reality isn't all rainbows and kittens, and there is a dark and gritty side to naturalism that has mainly to do with pragmatism and plain, unafraid honesty. Fear of hostility is for folks who still groom their My Little Ponies. Responsible adults who unabashedly face reality know that hostility is a part of life in a free society. We "Brights" need to get over our need to be loved, and just come right out and say it: "Yeah, that's right: naturalism is more enlightened than your silly superstitions. Get hip."

Dan Dennett is awesome. I saw his lecture at the 2007 AAI Conference. So great. I love the part where he talks about Supers and Murkies. :)

How do theists feel about being called Supers? Do they object to that?

I find it funny when people object to the name 'Brights.' Referring to yourself as 'bright' doesn't mean that other people AREN'T bright (even though it has been demonstrated that theists are, on the whole, dumber than atheists).
Perhaps some have internalized all the hatred of atheists that theists demonstrate, to the point that they feel guilty about calling themselves 'bright.'

Mymelody, when you go to your profile page ("My Page") you'll notice a little "Edit" button at the upper right of your Profile Information section (make sure you're logged in). Click on the Edit button. About the fourth item down the list is your Profile Photo. Click on that and you can change it.

Wow, neat-o. Everybody in this group talks like Frasier and Lilith. And I agree, the name "Rationalist" does sound less hostile, but I like "Brights" anyway. It makes us sound like a secret group of intelligentsia who all stand around swilling sherry and munching bree canapes, bandying about clever discussions in a jaunty devil-may-care fashion.
