The Brights

Think about your own worldview to decide if it is free of supernatural or mystical deities, forces, and entities. If you decide that you fit the description above, then you are, by definition, a bright!

What is a Bright?

* A bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview
* A bright's worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements
* The ethics and actions of a bright are based on a naturalistic worldview

* We promote the civic understanding and acknowledgment of the naturalistic worldview, which is free of supernatural and mystical elements.
* We gain public recognition that persons who hold such a worldview can bring principled actions to bear on matters of civic importance.
* We educate society toward accepting the full and equitable civic participation of all such individuals.

Daniel Dennett talks about the Brights movement.

"Believing there is no God gives me more room for belief in family, people, love, truth, beauty, sex, Jell-O and all the other things I can prove and that make this life the best life I will ever have." -Penn Jillette, active Bright of "Penn and Teller" fame

If today wasn't fools day then i would say Bye Bye to turn back to the world of spirits and souls, in other words you intend to go back to the mythical world. Its only the blind in the mind that can change their minds and denounce Atheism. Its such a nice life instance that suits Humanity!.

I see a lot of people registering here; how many of us have also registered as Brights at the website www.the-brights.net ?  It would be nice if people would say what they're up to!  What's your local situation?  Are you taking any action "as a bright"?

PROTEUS
2004NR 60 minutes available on Netflix.com

Director David Lebrun's animated documentary film examines the work of ERNST HAECKEL, the German biologist-artist who dedicated his life to finding and documenting the connection between the disparate worlds of art and science. Drawing on Haeckel's fascinating lithographs of the tiny undersea organisms called radiolarian, Lebrun's poetic film brings the biologist's visions to life and further explores the artistry of the natural world. Haeckel was a naturalist and an artist who became a champion for the theory of evolution. He adhered to a philosophy of "Natural Mysticism" the idea that the essence or spirit of "God"  permeated all life whether single cell organisms to humans -- something non-theists would probably call physics or chemistry.

The Fixation of Belief
Charles S. Peirce
Popular Science Monthly 12 (November 1877), 1-15.

"If liberty of speech is to be untrammeled from the grosser forms of constraint, then uniformity of opinion will be secured by a moral terrorism to which the respectability of society will give its thorough approval. Following the method of authority [reason] is the path of peace. "

Why Religious Believers Are So Desperate for the Atheist Seal of Approval
