Try Your Wings, by Blossom Dearie

This is a song that I just ran across recently. Although I have listened to a number of the “best of” albums of Blossom Dearie, this song was never included on any of them—and I can’t imagine why. This is a great, sweet, sentimental little song. I don't know much about her, and I only enjoy about half of what I've heard her perform.

Oddly enough, Blossom Dearie is little known today, even to people who I know are into jazz. I can’t really imagine why this is. Anyone who ever grew up watching Schoolhouse Rock might recognize her voice. She performed several songs for SR, including “Figure Eight”, “Unpack Your Adjectives”, and “Mother Necessity.”

Here are the lyrics for “Try Your Wings”, and the song is attached for you to listen to:

If you've never been in love
And you're longing for the happiness it brings
Try your wings

If you're hungry for the sound
Of a lover saying sentimental things
Try your wings

Even the tiniest bluebird
Has to leave its nest to fly
What a bluebird can do
You can do too, if you try

If you've always had a dream
But you've been afraid that it would not come true, hitherto
Fall in love and you will find
That it's just what you've been dreaming of

A first love never comes twice
So take this tender advice
When it comes, try your wings
And fly to the one you love

If you've always had a dream
But you've been afraid that it would not come true, hitherto
Fall in love and you will find
That it's just what you've been dreaming of

A first love never comes twice
So take this tender advice
When it comes, try your wings
And fly to the one you love
