I'm a medical student and I'm thinking about starting a secular medical student group. If these already exist I don't want to re-invent the wheel - does anyone know if any? I was thinking it would essentially serve two functions.
1) Counterbalance the occasional prayer breakfast or community service opportunity offered by one or two religious groups in the med school. (That said, they're not intrusive or fundamentalist by any stretch, but it would be nice to have a presence.)
2) Opportunity for ethical discussions, which I wish medical students would have more of. All are welcome, non-theist or otherwise.

Any knowledge of such a group already existing? Doesn't even have to be specifically medical students - other grad or professional programs with secular student groups would be helpful as well.

There's been some talk of doing a comprehensive faith and belief survey of students, but it's difficult working out a neutral question that'll give us good results. I definitely think it'll show many more atheists than people are expecting.

I don't know if wnyone here knows of the Student Panel, but they did a survey in July 2006 about students beliefs in creation/evolution - http://www.opinionpanel.co.uk/clientUpload/pdf/CreationandEvolution(Tables).pdf
I wonder if the survey was to be done again and in a more wider scale what would be found.

I imagine it must be hard, though things like Nexus must make it a little easier? Have you been in touch with the Secular Student Alliance? They might know of a group in your college, or people in your college who've been in touch with them about starting a group

I'm in the U.S., and I'm a college student. I attend a university in the deep south and finding like-minded students is not an easy task.
