Gotta love this (from the article about the 60-ft cross:

"We just thought that was too ostentatious or gaudy for our size of property," Jackson said.

"Twenty acres will support a 60-foot cross. I'm not sure it would look right to have a 100-foot cross."

Ummm, and 60 feet ISN'T "ostentatious" or "gaudy???"

Personally, I don't understand the point.  Christians who drive by may be all "woot woot!" about it, but non-Christians who drive by are just gonna be "whatevs."  So what exactly are they trying to accomplish?!

How utterly awful. In addition to the the fact that a Christian cross is offensive enough as it is, they're going to illuminate it. As an amateur astronomer I am constantly telling businesses and homeowners to replace lights that shine up and out with ones that shine down so our  pseudo-dark skies can stay somewhat dark. I've never been to Janesville before. Now I can say with a degree of certitude I never will.

Lawrence O'Donnell had a segment regarding the inauguration last week that was spot-on. I know it won't change anything but nevertheless I do hope President Obama saw it.

Remove bible from inauguration

Criminy.  No, it's not just you, Troy.  I think it's depressing, too.  :-(

Is it me or is this really depressing...

Tuesday, January 22 — National Prayer Service

One day after the swearing-in ceremony, President Obama and Vice President Biden along with dignitaries and  representatives from many faiths will attend the interfaith Inaugural National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral. The service will feature prayers, readings, and musical performances. The event is by invitation only, but it will be streamed live at the National Cathedral’s website. The tradition of the National Prayer Service began in 1933 with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) explained that “The beginning of President Obama’s second term will be marked by the acknowledgement and celebration of the role of people of faith in American life. President Obama’s own faith has played an integral role in his life, his commitment to service and his presidency, and this important tradition will celebrate the values and diversity that make us strong.”

The Cathedral also has a special exhibit, “Presidents at the Cathedral,” chronicling the past visits of U.S. presidents over the Cathedral’s 105-year history. The exhibit which opened this month is available for Cathedral visitors in the nave and on the Cathedral’s website.
