SWiFT members, do you think Jesus was a historical person?

I'm not sure this question is of broad interest to SWiFT members, but as an ex-Catholic, I can't help wondering and would love to know what others think.I raise the question of Jesus' historical…Continue

Why are tax breaks given to the religious? Seriously, I'm really asking...

I have a basic understanding of the separation of church and state, and I am a huge advocate.  It's why I joined ffrf.  I think people should be free to be religious or not.  I get why church/state…Continue

I wanted to discuss the anti-rational aspects of Christianity.  Why haven't fundamentalists and creationists gone away in modern society?  I am always amazed and discouraged by the amount of people…Continue

Mark, that is awesome.  Wow!  Thanks so much for sharing.  I'm showing it to my daughter right now.

I thought this was cool and worth sharing with the kids, especially if they're science fans or you're trying to foster an interest in science.  It's called "The Scale of the Universe 2."  Make sure to explore both sides of the scale.  You can click on any object to learn more -- from string at one end of the scale to the observable universe at the other -- and even Russell's Teapot in between.

Oh, the temptation!

I work in special collections for a bank. A customer called in the general line this morning to make a payment on her approved plan. When I answer the phone, she stated that god must be good as the tone of my voice automatically placed her at ease.

Oh the tempation! Listen, Lady, there is no god. You are talking to an atheist. The reason my voice is putting you at ease is because that is my job, I am motivated to do my job well because it is the right thing to do - not fear of punishment or promise of reward.

God isn't good. God is a myth.

One of these days I am going to crack and break some poor person's heart. Just thought this story was too funny to not share with folks who understand...

To all of you that were not able to make it to the Rally because of the bus situation or other reasons, I'm truly sorry.  To all of you that did make it, thanks and wow!!  To all: We will have a video recap of the Rally and the American Atheist Convention at the next SWiFT meeting this Sunday.  Hope everyone can make it.

I really need to get to more of the local functions and meet more of you guys.  If I could have gotten a carpool going (take turns driving and help paying for gas), I might have been able to swing it.  On my own, though, not enough time or money.

I'll be properly envious, too!  <hands Troy a tissue>

The Madison and Milwaukee bus routes were the same bus, and yes - the cancellation is confirmed (Troy weeps).

Hope all have fun at the Rally. I can't wait to hear all of the reports at the next meeting... I will be properly envious.

It looks like both the Madison and Milwaukee buses were canceled.

Comment by Troy Gorsline on March 19, 2012 at 9:49am

I am signed up for the bus. It is a break neck schedule, but it is also the only way I can attend the Rally. I still need 17 more tickets to sell in order for the trip to be confirmed. I will be crushed if it doesn't. C'mon!!! Once in a lifetime with a weekend ticket. No housing or parking. True, there can be no partying after, but Dawkins and Bad Religion on the same venue???

We gotta go!!!

Comment by Mark Michicich on March 18, 2012 at 12:00pm

Hi Kurt.  Yes, I'm going to be there with Margie and the girls.  You've got my cell.  We plan to get there at 9am to stake out a good spot for the day.  Just saw the official schedule:

Looks like it will be a great day!

See you there,

Mark
