Hello, At the last SWIFT monthly meetup we discussed putting together an Adopt-a-Highway program. We are going to organize a pick-up 3 times a year (between April and November) and I know a lot of…Continue

I'm not sure this question is of broad interest to SWiFT members, but as an ex-Catholic, I can't help wondering and would love to know what others think.I raise the question of Jesus' historical…Continue

I have a basic understanding of the separation of church and state, and I am a huge advocate. It's why I joined ffrf. I think people should be free to be religious or not. I get why church/state…Continue

I wanted to discuss the anti-rational aspects of Christianity. Why haven't fundamentalists and creationists gone away in modern society? I am always amazed and discouraged by the amount of people…Continue

Mojo: No way! Ya Highland House is about 2 miles from me, friends and I go there to drink occassionally :) Pretty good food too.
Kurt: Thanks :) That'd be awesome to do some get-togethers, although unfortunately I might be moving to Madison in July, Mequon will still be a place I come back to with some frequency I think. And yes, I know plenty of LGBT friends who are sick of getting so pounded by religion. Just a non-stop pound fest, really. Ok I'm done ;p
AKron: Ya I think you're thinking of a different thing, Pridefest is a Milwaukee event going on at the Summerfest grounds this weekend. Always a good time :)

Comment by Kurt Bocksenbaum on June 8, 2011 at 8:45pm Welcome Chris. Thanks for joining. I actually live near the Mequon border in Brown Deer. We will be having a number of get-togethers this summer near or possibly in Mequon.
As to the demographics, I think you would be surprised to know how many non-religious there really are in Mequon. Both Christianity and Judaism are heavily represented - but so are atheists. We'll have to connect in person.
As to Pridefest, I pretty much gave up on the festivals many years ago - just too busy with work, family, stuff. Reaching out to the LGBT community is definitely something we will do more of. I know may LGBTs are very disenfrancised by the pounding they get from traditional religions.

Comment by mojo5501 on June 8, 2011 at 7:18pm Chris: I'm familiar with Mequon....I waited tables at the Highland House in the '80's. (I went to high school in Cedarburg and attended college @UW-Milwaukee....sociology and anthropology helped me lose my religious upbringing...once the social sciences get into your brain cells, it's difficult to see the need for religion! ha)
Is the Highland House even there in Mequon anymore? I'm sticking close to home this weekend. The Farmer's Market just opened last week in Beloit so I'm going to go check it out, weather permitting. It's usually got more to offer than the ones here in J-ville: But J-ville has a farmer's mkt on SUNDAY so I like to stop over at that one once in awhile for variety).
Glad to see a group that focuses on SE Wisconsin particularly, feels like an atheist ghost town in the Mequon area (lot of rich, white Catholics :/).
Anyone else heading to Pridefest this weekend to support our LGBT brethren?

Comment by mojo5501 on June 8, 2011 at 4:25pm SWiFT is a clever acronym. It'll make a great t-shirt/conversation-starter! (I work at UPS in the office so I'm used to a lot of acronyms.) I don't know very many people that are religiously unaffiliated. It's not an easy conversation to start but I've been known to be honest when asked directly. Not supposed to talk about this sort of thing at work, but it comes up occasionally. I especially like to respond when a co-worker states that something is 'god's will'....that usually gets me to offer my 2 cents worth. Saying nothing would be the same as agreement, right??
