I have actually been stationed at Fort Hood, TX and so haven’t experienced any discrimination recently from SC but being from SC I can tell you that I have experience some discrimination particularly in the work place and school.

Ah, Gage Hall. I used to play guitar at the Sunday nite "coffee house" there, organized by a local lawyer named Edmund. He was a master of some of the old school folk acoustic instruments. I believe he started a local folk music society a few years later...

Speaking of local reactions to real live atheists in the world, I got some funny looks from my fellow cast members when I told them I was a humanist while playing the bible-quoting Brady in Inherit The Wind recently. Most of them didn't seem to actually grasp the point of the play at all, and were sure their side won...

For Charleston people, Secular Humanists of the Low Country meet monthly from September to May and are usually located at Gage Hall on Archdale street in downtown Charleston. I don't get to the meetings due to COPD and the necessity of staying away from groups but these are some good people who have interesting speakers and thought provoking discussion.

I loved the recent comment by Cardinal O'Connor that atheists are not fully human. I understand that theists don't like our stances, or I should say many don't, but where do they get these absurd beliefs from? They just pull this stuff out of their asses.

I find that the "shit storm" isn't all that bad when you talk to the religious moderates face to face. (At least, that's been my experience with many of them here in Charleston, and of course, this doesn’t necessarily apply to fundies).
When I tell them I'm an agnostic/atheist, they seem very surprised that I don't have horns protruding out of my forehead. And when we get into discussions about what it is I really believe and value, they typically are pleasantly shocked that they agree with me.
Most churches (including, actually, our culture) have demonized atheism, and so this "shit storm" that begins to fire up due to billboards like this are usually targeted at a parody of atheism (created by the church), not the atheists themselves.
