Hello everyone.  I am an atheist in Anderson, SC looking to start or join meetings in the Anderson/Greenville area.  I have been trying to find a way to meet fellow atheists in the area but as you may know that is not an easy task.  I have started an atheist website and forum to help achieve this along with finding sites and groups like this.  The following is a copy of a facebook post I made to get the word out.  I look forward to meeting all of you and talking with you.

Joey.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how lonely it can be being an atheist in South Carolina. I came to my lack of belief years ago but did not express it until later. Many people choose to be “closet atheists” because the word “atheis...t” makes others cringe because of their lack of understanding, especially in the south. Being an atheist is nothing to be ashamed of. Atheists are the most misunderstood, hated, and mistrusted minority in America. How can a simple lack of belief in the supernatural lead to such a view of an entire group of people? We are not the monsters we are sometimes portrayed to be.

This is why I have started a website for atheists. My hope is to reach out to atheists in the area and even nationally. I have started a Facebook page called ReasonSC to go along with the site in hopes of meeting other atheists in the upstate of South Carolina. I have also created a Facebook page to partner with the website itself. The name of the website is Damned and Free. The name comes from the ending of an essay I wrote to be considered for an upcoming book “Atheists in America: Narratives from an Invisible Minority” by Melanie Elyse Brewster.

“Some religious people think atheists don’t have anything to live for. I personally do. I will live my life for myself and for those I love. I will live my life free of religious dogma, free from religious taboos, free from religious superstition, and free from religious guilt and fear. Some will say that I am damned, and maybe I am, but I am also free.” -Joey Barrett

I'm hoping that I can attend this picnic. I also hope that plenty show up as well. It will be good to be away from the computer and socializing. A few of the Greenville Non-Theist meetup are also planning on attending.

Camp Quest is coming to South Carolina in October, 2011 with a first ever family weekend camp!

Camp Quest is a summer camp with a focus on fun, friends, and freethought, and is aimed at the children from atheist, secular humanist, and other free-thinking families.  Campers learn about science, ethics, religion, and critical thinking through games, skits, and other activities.  These educational programs are interspersed with traditional camp activities such as swimming, games, arts and crafts, campfires, and more.  Camp Quest builds a community for our children and teenagers and provides campers a place to explore their developing worldviews, ask questions, and make friends in an environment supportive of critical thinking and skepticism.  At Camp Quest, we encourage campers to think for themselves, be comfortable with who they are, and engage respectfully with people who have different views.

The first week-long summer camp for kids 8-17yo will be NEXT summer, 2012, but we are having a weekend camp for the whole family (as in the youngest baby to the oldest grandparent) October 1-2, 2011. It will be a mini-Camp Quest with something for everyone, and highlights include a parents program led by Dale McGowan. The cost is $50 per person ages 4yo and up, free for children 0-3yo, and includes all food, activities, and lodging.  For more information about the weekend camp, please visit http://campquestsc.org/cqsc-weekend-family-camp/.

Attn Greenville families:  Greenville Nontheists is planning another Children's Playdate on Saturday 7/30 at 11am at Cleveland Park, right across from the Greenville Zoo.

Short notice (I know and I'm sorry) but there will be a children's playdate in Greenville at Cleveland Park Friday, 7/8, 11am.  About 7 or 8 families are going.  If you're in the area and want to meet some other like-minded families, this would be a great opportunity.

Looking to have a children's playdate in Greenville at Cleveland Park one day next week or possibly the week after.  Right now I know there are 5 families interested in going.  Anyone else?
