Others are wiser than I by keeping thoughts private. I would agree to that ... but ... there are some situations that need to be revealed and that for centuries, probably eons, people have been instructed and coerced to remain silent. Silencers use the tactics of shame and guilt upon the ones exploited, or use religious dogma to scare those who would speak with fears of eternal damnation. There are other devices and the end result is SILENCE DOES NOT HELP! It contributes to domination's success.
I speak, not because it is easy, but because it is hard, and necessary to awaken those who are afraid there are other options than submitting, there are those who are uninformed crimes happen that harm victims, there are those who don't care and even with accurate information have no interest in changes.
The value of a place like Atheist Nexus is it's relative safety and it's daring to go into those forbidden thoughts of "I see no evidence of god/s."

Comment by Joan Denoo on October 12, 2012 at 4:17pm Christi C., I just watched the video, "Atheists On Religion, Science, And Morality (The Point)" and very much like the conversation they had. I am reposting with attribution (notice, Loren, I am teachable).
I especially like the interaction between Cara Santa Maria (Senior Science Correspondent, Huffingtonpost.com), Michael Shermer (Publisher - Skeptic Magazine), Sean Carroll (Theoretical Physicist - Caltech), and Edward Falzon (author of 'Being Gay Is Disgusting').
I like the Inserted videos with James Randi (Founder: James Randi Educational Foundation), Paul Zachary "PZ" Myers (Blogger: Pharyngula.org - Professor U Of MN-Morris), and AJ Johnson (Development Director for 'American Atheists').

Comment by Loren Miller on April 22, 2012 at 6:04am Steph, there was a time when I avoided confrontation like the plague, mostly because I was afraid of the consequences or was intimidated by the situation or those in it. My "camel's back" has since been broken ... into tiny pieces, and I find myself enabled to defend the one thing I HAVE to be able to defend if I am going to deal with any other issue:
ME.
If you can't stand for yourself, you're going to have one hell of a time standing for anything else.
Thanks Loren! I actually don't like confrontation myself .. but I see where you need to "put your foot down" on certain things.

Religious proselytism which steps on my rights, beliefs or the conduct of my life does not fly with me ... and beliefs or fists waved about had better respect my nose!
and I would add, eyes.
I goofed on the place I posted this ... I want the "Reply", not the "Add Comment" one. Hummmm, I'll have to read the instruction manual.
Comment by Loren Miller on April 12, 2012 at 7:38am People are supposed to be polite, to defer to others and attempt to avoid confrontation or conflict. Sometimes that is possible, perhaps even desirable.
But when keeping silent amounts to the obviation of someone's rights for the sake of political correctness or some other suchlike pseudo-value ... no, that is neither tenable nor acceptable. Religious proselytism which steps on my rights, beliefs or the conduct of my life does not fly with me ... and beliefs or fists waved about had better respect my nose!
